After Bhishma taught Yudhishthira the thousand names of Vishnu on the field of Kurukshetra, he proclaimed their fruits. Among these declarations stands this assurance: that the mortal who takes refuge in Vasudeva crosses all sorrow and reaches the eternal Brahman, and that no fear of the cycle of birth and death ever touches Vasudeva's devotees.

The Sri Vaishnava tradition cherishes 'Vasudevashrayo martyo' as proof that even a single sincere act of surrender to Vasudeva burns away the sins of many lifetimes; saints such as Bhishma himself are said to have attained the highest state by holding fast to this refuge at the moment of death.

ഏതെങ്കിലും വരിയിലോ ▶ ബട്ടണിലോ തൊട്ട് കേൾക്കൂ
ദുര്ഗാണ്യതിതരത്യാശു പുരുഷഃ പുരുഷോത്തമമ് । സ്തുവന്നാമസഹസ്രേണ നിത്യം ഭക്തിസമന്വിതഃ ॥
Durgāṇyatitaratyāśu puruṣaḥ puruṣottamam | Stuvannāmasahasreṇa nityaṁ bhaktisamanvitaḥ ||
അർഥം:जो पुरुष भक्ति से युक्त होकर प्रतिदिन इन सहस्र नामों द्वारा पुरुषोत्तम की स्तुति करता है, वह समस्त कठिनाइयों को शीघ्र पार कर जाता है।
വാസുദേവാശ്രയോ മര്ത്യോ വാസുദേവപരായണഃ । സര്വപാപവിശുദ്ധാത്മാ യാതി ബ്രഹ്മ സനാതനമ് ॥
Vāsudevāśrayo martyo vāsudevaparāyaṇaḥ | Sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā yāti brahma sanātanam ||
അർഥം:जो मर्त्य वासुदेव की शरण में रहता है और वासुदेव में ही तत्पर है, उसका आत्मा समस्त पापों से शुद्ध होकर सनातन ब्रह्म को प्राप्त करता है।
ന വാസുദേവഭക്താനാമശുഭം വിദ്യതേ ക്വചിത് । ജന്മമൃത്യുജരാവ്യാധിഭയം നൈവോപജായതേ ॥
Na vāsudevabhaktānāmaśubhaṁ vidyate kvacit | Janmamṛtyujarāvyādhibhayaṁ naivopajāyate ||
അർഥം:वासुदेव के भक्तों को कहीं भी अशुभ नहीं होता; जन्म, मृत्यु, वृद्धावस्था और रोग का भय उनमें उत्पन्न ही नहीं होता।
ഇമം സ്തവമധീയാനഃ ശ്രദ്ധാഭക്തിസമന്വിതഃ । യുജ്യേതാത്മസുഖക്ഷാന്തിശ്രീധൃതിസ്മൃതികീര്തിഭിഃ ॥
Imaṁ stavamadhīyānaḥ śraddhābhaktisamanvitaḥ | Yujyetātmasukhakṣāntiśrīdhṛtismṛtikīrtibhiḥ ||
അർഥം:जो इस स्तव का श्रद्धा और भक्ति सहित पाठ करता है, वह आत्मसुख, क्षमा, श्री, धैर्य, स्मृति और कीर्ति से सम्पन्न हो जाता है।
ന ക്രോധോ ന ച മാത്സര്യം ന ലോഭോ നാശുഭാ മതിഃ । ഭവന്തി കൃതപുണ്യാനാം ഭക്താനാം പുരുഷോത്തമേ ॥
Na krodho na ca mātsaryaṁ na lobho nāśubhā matiḥ | Bhavanti kṛtapuṇyānāṁ bhaktānāṁ puruṣottame ||
അർഥം:पुरुषोत्तम के भक्त पुण्यात्माओं में न क्रोध होता है, न मात्सर्य, न लोभ और न ही अशुभ बुद्धि।

Swiftly carries the devotee across all difficulties and adversities
Grants the eternal Brahman (moksha) to one who takes refuge in Vasudeva
Removes the fear of birth, death, old age and disease for the devotee
Bestows inner joy, patience, prosperity, fortitude, memory and fame
Destroys anger, jealousy, greed and impure thoughts in the heart
Affirms total surrender (sharanagati) to Vasudeva as the highest refuge
वासुदेवाश्रयो मर्त्यः (विष्णु सहस्रनाम फलश्रुति) പാരായണ വിധി
These verses are chanted as part of the phalashruti at the end of the thousand names of Vishnu. After completing the Sahasranama with a calm and pure mind, recite these slokas to affirm refuge in Vasudeva and to invoke their fruit. The verse 'Vasudevashrayo martyo' is especially treasured by Sri Vaishnavas as a declaration of saving surrender, and may be reflected upon on its own.
