Santoshi Mata Vrat (Friday Fast)

संतोषी माता व्रत (शुक्रवार व्रत)

Deity: Santoshi Mata16 consecutive Fridays

Santoshi Mata Vrat (संतोषी माता व्रत) is a popular Hindu vrat observed on 16 consecutive Fridays (Shukravar). Santoshi Mata is the goddess of satisfaction and contentment — daughter of Lord Ganesha. This vrat is especially popular among married women seeking family harmony, prosperity, and the fulfillment of wishes. The vrat became widely known after the 1975 Bollywood film "Jai Santoshi Maa."

Fasting Rules & Vidhi

1.

Observe the vrat on 16 consecutive Fridays. Missing even one Friday means starting over.

2.

Eat only one meal a day — after performing the puja. The meal should not contain sour items (no lemon, tamarind, pickle, curd, tomato).

3.

Offer gudh (jaggery) and roasted chana (chickpeas) as prasad — this is Santoshi Mata's favorite offering.

4.

Recite Santoshi Mata Katha and perform Santoshi Mata Aarti.

5.

On the 16th Friday, perform Udyapan (conclusion ceremony) by feeding 8 boys a festive meal.

6.

Do not consume or serve sour food on any Friday during the vrat period.

Significance & Story

Santoshi Mata is believed to be the daughter of Lord Ganesha, born from the blessings of Riddhi and Siddhi. She represents "Santosh" (contentment) — the highest form of spiritual wealth. The vrat story tells of a poor woman named Satyavati whose devotion to Santoshi Mata transformed her life from poverty to prosperity. The vrat teaches that true contentment comes from faith and devotion, not material wealth.

Santoshi Mata Vrat (Friday Fast) Katha (Vrat Story)

In a certain town lived an old woman with seven sons. Six earned well, but the youngest was simple-hearted and poor, and his wife was treated harshly — given only the leftover scraps and the heaviest work. One day a wandering sadhu told the young wife of the vrat of Maa Santoshi, the goddess of contentment: to be kept on Fridays with faith, offering gur (jaggery) and chana (roasted gram) — and, above all, neither eating nor giving anything sour on that day.

The young woman kept the Santoshi Mata vrat each Friday with sincere devotion. Pleased, the goddess blessed her: her husband, who had gone to a distant land to earn, prospered greatly and sent word and wealth home. When at last he returned rich, the jealous sisters-in-law schemed against her. On a Friday they secretly fed her something sour — khatai — breaking the vrat, and at once misfortune fell upon the household and her husband was troubled.

Grief-stricken, the young wife prayed to Santoshi Mata for forgiveness and vowed to keep the vrat again, perfectly. She renewed her fast with whole-hearted faith, and the goddess — ever quick to be pleased and quick to forgive — set everything right once more.

When the time came, the devotee held the Udyapan: she fed eight young boys a meal of kheer-puri with no sour food at all, and worshipped the goddess. So Maa Santoshi blessed her with lasting happiness, prosperity and a child. This is why devotees keep the Santoshi Mata Shukravar vrat — usually for sixteen Fridays — taking gur and chana, strictly avoiding anything sour, and completing it with the Udyapan, for the fulfilment of heartfelt wishes.
