✦ अर्थ
दुर्गा सप्तशती के अष्टम अध्याय के ये श्लोक रक्तबीज के वध का वर्णन करते हैं — वह दैत्य जिसके रक्त की प्रत्येक गिरती बूँद से उसी के समान बलशाली नया दैत्य उत्पन्न हो जाता था। जब बढ़ते असुरों को देख देवता निराश हुए, तब चण्डिका ने हँसकर चामुण्डा (काली) को आज्ञा दी कि वे अपना मुख फैलाकर हर रक्त-बूँद को पी जाएँ, जबकि देवी उस पर प्रहार करती रहीं। पृथ्वी पर गिरने से पूर्व ही रक्त सूख जाने से अजेय प्रतीत होने वाला रक्तबीज अन्ततः नष्ट हो गया।

In the war against Shumbha and Nishumbha, the band of Mother-goddesses (Matrikas) routed the demon armies until Raktabija advanced. Because every drop of his blood spawned a new demon of equal might, the battlefield filled with countless asuras and the gods despaired. Chandika then commanded Chamunda to drink his blood while she struck him, and the bloodless Raktabija was destroyed.

Devotees recount that this verse is chanted when troubles seem to multiply faster than they can be solved; just as Raktabija's clones vanished once his blood was consumed at the source, sincere recitation is said to dry up the very root from which recurring difficulties spring.

रक्तबिन्दुर्यदा भूमौ पतत्यस्य शरीरतः । समुत्पतति मेदिन्यां तत्प्रमाणो महासुरः ॥
raktabinduryadā bhūmau patatyasya śarīrataḥ samutpatati medinyāṃ tatpramāṇo mahāsuraḥ
अर्थ:जब-जब उसके शरीर से रक्त की एक बूँद भूमि पर गिरती, तब-तब पृथ्वी से उसी के बराबर का एक महान् असुर उत्पन्न हो जाता। देवताओं को विषण्ण देख चण्डिका ने हँसकर शीघ्र ही काली से कहा: 'हे चामुण्डे! अपना मुख विस्तृत करो! मेरे शस्त्र-प्रहार से उत्पन्न रक्त की बूँदों को, और रक्त की बूँदों से उत्पन्न महान् असुरों को, इस अपने वेगवान् मुख से ग्रहण करो। उससे उत्पन्न महान् असुरों को खाती हुई रणभूमि में विचरो; इस प्रकार यह दैत्य रक्तहीन होकर नाश को प्राप्त होगा।'
तान् विषण्णान् सुरान् दृष्ट्वा चण्डिका प्राहसत्वरम् । उवाच कालीं चामुण्डे विस्तीर्णं वदनं कुरु ॥
tān viṣaṇṇān surān dṛṣṭvā caṇḍikā prāhasatvaram uvāca kālīṃ cāmuṇḍe vistīrṇaṃ vadanaṃ kuru
मच्छस्त्रपातसम्भूतान् रक्तबिन्दून् महासुरान् । रक्तबिन्दोः प्रतीच्छ त्वं वक्त्रेणानेन वेगिना ॥
macchastrapātasambhūtān raktabindūn mahāsurān raktabindoḥ pratīccha tvaṃ vaktreṇānena veginā
भक्षयन्ती चरन् रणे तदुत्पन्नान्महासुरान् । एवमेष क्षयं दैत्यः क्षेणरक्तो गमिष्यति ॥
