Meaning

The Mrityunjaya Manasika Puja Stotram, attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, is a hymn of 'mental worship' (manasa puja) of Shiva as Mrityunjaya, the conqueror of death. Since the Lord pervades all, the devotee offers — purely in imagination — a jewelled seat, sacred bath, garments, sandal, flowers, food, music, dance and prostrations, then surrenders all actions as worship and prays for forgiveness and protection. Its closing verse promises that one who recites it daily with devotion conquers death and attains the imperishable state of Shiva.

Origin & Story

Shaiva stotra corpus attributed to Adi Shankaracharya · Adi Shankaracharya (traditionally) · c. 8th century CE

This hymn belongs to the tradition of manasa-puja stotras in which the worshipper, recognising that the all-pervading Lord needs nothing external, offers the entire sixteen-fold service (shodashopachara) within the heart. Composed in the spirit of Shankaracharya's better-known Shiva Manasa Puja, it specifically invokes Shiva as Mrityunjaya — the vanquisher of death — and culminates, like that hymn, in the surrender of all one's faults and actions, and the famous declaration that everything one does is itself worship of Shambhu.

As told in scripture

Because it invokes Mrityunjaya, the conqueror of death, this manasa puja is traditionally recited at the bedside of the sick and the aged for healing and a long life; devotees hold that even one who cannot rise to perform external worship can, by offering this heartfelt mental puja, receive Shiva's protection and a peaceful, liberated passing.

Manasika (or Manasa) Puja means 'mental worship' — performing the entire ritual of worship within the mind through vivid imagination, offering the deity a seat, bath, garments, food, music and so on, without any physical materials. It is considered a very high form of worship because it depends purely on devotion and concentration.
Mrityunjaya means 'the conqueror of death'. It is a name of Shiva, especially in his aspect that overcomes death and grants longevity and liberation. The same aspect is invoked by the famous Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra (Om Tryambakam Yajamahe).
This celebrated verse turns the whole of life into worship: it declares that Shiva is one's very Self, that one's intellect is Parvati, one's body is his temple, sleep is samadhi, walking is circumambulation, and every word a hymn — so that whatever one does becomes adoration of Shiva. It is also famously recited at the close of conventional puja.
The closing phalashruti states that whoever recites this manasa puja daily, with devotion and free of laziness, conquers death by the grace of Mrityunjaya and attains 'Shivam Padam Avyayam' — the auspicious, imperishable state of Shiva (liberation).
