The Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati or Chandi), part of the Markandeya Purana, recounts the Divine Mother's victories over the demons. In Chapter 12, after the Narayani Stuti, the Goddess speaks the phalashruti — the declaration of the blessings of her worship. Here she singles out the 'sharatkale mahapuja,' the great annual autumn Navaratri, promising that those who hear her Mahatmya then will be freed from every calamity and blessed with abundance. She further describes its power in rites of peace and amid bad dreams, planetary afflictions, child-seizing spirits, broken friendships and malign beings — declaring her glory to be a refuge in every trouble.

Tradition holds that the autumn Navaratri recitation of the Durga Saptashati, blessed by the Goddess's own words here, brings prosperity and peace to entire households. Devotees recount evil dreams turning auspicious, harsh planetary periods passing peacefully, and discord dissolving into harmony after hearing the Devi Mahatmya during Sharad Navaratri.

ଯେକୌଣସି ଧାଡ଼ି କିମ୍ବା ▶ ବଟନ୍ ଛୁଇଁ ଶୁଣନ୍ତୁ
ଶରତ୍କାଲେ ମହାପୂଜା କ୍ରିଯତେ ଯା ଚ ଵାର୍ଷିକୀ । ତସ୍ଯାଂ ମମୈତନ୍ମାହାତ୍ମ୍ଯଂ ଶ୍ରୁତ୍ଵା ଭକ୍ତିସମନ୍ଵିତଃ ॥
śaratkāle mahāpūjā kriyate yā ca vārṣikī tasyāṃ mamaitanmāhātmyaṃ śrutvā bhaktisamanvitaḥ
ଅର୍ଥ:जो भक्ति से युक्त होकर शरत्काल में की जाने वाली वार्षिक महापूजा में मेरे इस माहात्म्य को सुन लेता है — वह मनुष्य मेरी कृपा से समस्त बाधाओं से मुक्त और धन-धान्य से सम्पन्न हो जाएगा; इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं।
ସର୍ଵାବାଧାଵିନିର୍ମୁକ୍ତୋ ଧନଧାନ୍ଯସମନ୍ଵିତଃ । ମନୁଷ୍ଯୋ ମତ୍ପ୍ରସାଦେନ ଭଵିଷ୍ଯତି ନ ସଂଶଯଃ ॥
sarvābādhāvinirmukto dhanadhānyasamanvitaḥ manuṣyo matprasādena bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ
ଅର୍ଥ:मेरे इस माहात्म्य को, तथा मेरी शुभ उत्पत्तियों और युद्धों में पराक्रम को सुनकर मनुष्य निर्भय हो जाता है। उसके शत्रु नष्ट हो जाते हैं, कल्याण की प्राप्ति होती है, और मेरे माहात्म्य को सुनने वालों का कुल आनन्दित होता है।
ଶ୍ରୁତ୍ଵା ମମୈତନ୍ମାହାତ୍ମ୍ଯଂ ତଥା ଚୋତ୍ପତ୍ତଯଃ ଶୁଭାଃ । ପରାକ୍ରମଂ ଚ ଯୁଦ୍ଧେଷୁ ଜାଯତେ ନିର୍ଭଯଃ ପୁମାନ୍ ॥
śrutvā mamaitanmāhātmyaṃ tathā cotpattayaḥ śubhāḥ parākramaṃ ca yuddheṣu jāyate nirbhayaḥ pumān
ଅର୍ଥ:सर्वत्र — शान्ति-कर्म में, दुःस्वप्न-दर्शन में, और उग्र ग्रह-पीड़ाओं में — मनुष्य को मेरा माहात्म्य सुनना चाहिए। उपसर्ग शान्त हो जाते हैं, और दारुण ग्रह-पीड़ाएँ भी; और मनुष्यों द्वारा देखा गया दुःस्वप्न सुस्वप्न में बदल जाता है।
ରିପଵଃ ସଙ୍କ୍ଷଯଂ ଯାନ୍ତି କଲ୍ଯାଣଂ ଚୋପପଦ୍ଯତେ । ନନ୍ଦତେ ଚ କୁଲଂ ପୁଂସାଂ ମାହାତ୍ମ୍ଯଂ ମମ ଶୃଣ୍ଵତାମ୍ ॥
ripavaḥ saṅkṣayaṃ yānti kalyāṇaṃ copapadyate nandate ca kulaṃ puṃsāṃ māhātmyaṃ mama śṛṇvatām
ଅର୍ଥ:यह बालग्रहों से पीड़ित बच्चों को शान्ति देने वाला है; और मनुष्यों में फूट पड़ने पर मैत्री कराने का उत्तम साधन है। यह समस्त दुराचारियों के बल को घटाने वाला परम साधन है; इसके पाठ मात्र से राक्षसों, भूतों और पिशाचों का नाश हो जाता है।
ଶାନ୍ତିକର୍ମଣି ସର୍ଵତ୍ର ତଥା ଦୁଃସ୍ଵପ୍ନଦର୍ଶନେ । ଗ୍ରହପୀଡାସୁ ଚୋଗ୍ରାସୁ ମାହାତ୍ମ୍ଯଂ ଶୃଣୁଯାନ୍ମମ ॥
śāntikarmaṇi sarvatra tathā duḥsvapnadarśane grahapīḍāsu cogrāsu māhātmyaṃ śṛṇuyānmama
ଉପସର୍ଗାଃ ଶମଂ ଯାନ୍ତି ଗ୍ରହପୀଡାଶ୍ଚ ଦାରୁଣାଃ । ଦୁଃସ୍ଵପ୍ନଂ ଚ ନୃଭିର୍ଦୃଷ୍ଟଂ ସୁସ୍ଵପ୍ନମୁପଜାଯତେ ॥
upasargāḥ śamaṃ yānti grahapīḍāśca dāruṇāḥ duḥsvapnaṃ ca nṛbhirdṛṣṭaṃ susvapnamupajāyate
ବାଲଗ୍ରହାଭିଭୂତାନାଂ ବାଲାନାଂ ଶାନ୍ତିକାରକମ୍ । ସଙ୍ଘାତଭେଦେ ଚ ନୃଣାଂ ମୈତ୍ରୀକରଣମୁତ୍ତମମ୍ ॥

ଦୁର୍ଵୃତ୍ତାନାମଶେଷାଣାଂ ବଲହାନିକରଂ ପରମ୍ । ରକ୍ଷୋଭୂତପିଶାଚାନାଂ ପଠନାଦେଵ ନାଶନମ୍ ॥
durvṛttānāmaśeṣāṇāṃ balahānikaraṃ param rakṣobhūtapiśācānāṃ paṭhanādeva nāśanam

शरत्काले महापूजा ପାଠ ବିଧି
Hear or recite these verses with devotion, especially during the autumn Navaratri (Sharad Navaratri), as the Goddess herself prescribes. They are read as part of the phalashruti of the Durga Saptashati. Devotees facing bad dreams, planetary trouble or family discord recite them in a spirit of surrender; light a lamp before the Devi's image and listen with a calm, faithful heart to invite her peace and protection.
