After Raktabija was slain, the demon-brothers Shumbha and Nishumbha gave way to measureless wrath and attacked the Goddess together. In the fierce duel, Nishumbha repeatedly assailed Chandika with sword, spear, pike and mace, each shattered by the Devi. Finally she pierced his heart with her pike, beheaded the second warrior who sprang from it, and laid Nishumbha low, leaving Shumbha to face her alone.

ഏതെങ്കിലും വരിയിലോ ▶ ബട്ടണിലോ തൊട്ട് കേൾക്കൂ
തതോ ഭഗവതീ ക്രുദ്ധാ ദുര്ഗാ ദുര്ഗാര്തിനാശിനീ । ചിച്ഛേദ ദേവീ ചക്രാണി സ്വശരൈഃ സായകാംശ്ച താന് ॥
tato bhagavatī kruddhā durgā durgārtināśinī ciccheda devī cakrāṇi svaśaraiḥ sāyakāṃśca tān
അർഥം:तब क्रुद्ध भगवती दुर्गा, दुर्गति और दुस्तर पीड़ाओं का नाश करने वाली, ने अपने बाणों से उन चक्रों और बाणों को काट डाला। पीड़ा देने वाला निशुम्भ जब हाथ में शूल लिए आगे बढ़ा, तब चण्डिका ने वेग से फेंके गए शूल से उसके हृदय को बेध दिया। शूल से बिंधे उसके हृदय से एक और महाबली, महापराक्रमी पुरुष 'ठहर!' कहता हुआ निकला। उसके निकलते ही देवी ने अट्टहास करके खड्ग से उसका सिर काट डाला; तब वह भूमि पर गिर पड़ा।
ശൂലഹസ്തം സമായാന്തം നിശുമ്ഭമമരാര്ദനമ് । ഹൃദി വിവ്യാധ ശൂലേന വേഗാവിദ്ധേന ചണ്ഡികാ ॥
śūlahastaṃ samāyāntaṃ niśumbhamamarārdanam hṛdi vivyādha śūlena vegāviddhena caṇḍikā
ഭിന്നസ്യ തസ്യ ശൂലേന ഹൃദയാന്നിഃസൃതോഽപരഃ । മഹാബലോ മഹാവീര്യസ്തിഷ്ഠേതി പുരുഷോ വദന് ॥
bhinnasya tasya śūlena hṛdayānniḥsṛto'paraḥ mahābalo mahāvīryastiṣṭheti puruṣo vadan
തസ്യ നിഷ്ക്രാമതോ ദേവീ പ്രഹസ്യ സ്വനവത്തതഃ । ശിരശ്ചിച്ഛേദ ഖഡ്ഗേന തതോഽസാവപതദ്ഭുവി ॥
tasya niṣkrāmato devī prahasya svanavattataḥ śiraściccheda khaḍgena tato'sāvapatadbhuvi
