दुर्गा सप्तशती के नवम अध्याय का यह प्रसंग देवी को 'भगवती दुर्गा, दुर्गार्तिनाशिनी' — दुर्गति और दुस्तर बाधाओं का नाश करने वाली — के रूप में नाम देता है, और निशुम्भ दैत्य के वध का वर्णन करता है। जब निशुम्भ उन पर झपटता है, तब चण्डिका वेग से शूल उसके हृदय में मारती हैं; बिंधे हृदय से एक दूसरा योद्धा 'ठहर!' कहता हुआ निकलता है, परन्तु अट्टहास करती देवी उसका भी सिर काट देती हैं। यह श्लोक दुर्गा के प्रभावशाली विशेषण और विजय के इस अद्भुत क्षण — दोनों के लिए प्रिय है।

After Raktabija was slain, the demon-brothers Shumbha and Nishumbha gave way to measureless wrath and attacked the Goddess together. In the fierce duel, Nishumbha repeatedly assailed Chandika with sword, spear, pike and mace, each shattered by the Devi. Finally she pierced his heart with her pike, beheaded the second warrior who sprang from it, and laid Nishumbha low, leaving Shumbha to face her alone.

अर्थ:तब क्रुद्ध भगवती दुर्गा, दुर्गति और दुस्तर पीड़ाओं का नाश करने वाली, ने अपने बाणों से उन चक्रों और बाणों को काट डाला। पीड़ा देने वाला निशुम्भ जब हाथ में शूल लिए आगे बढ़ा, तब चण्डिका ने वेग से फेंके गए शूल से उसके हृदय को बेध दिया। शूल से बिंधे उसके हृदय से एक और महाबली, महापराक्रमी पुरुष 'ठहर!' कहता हुआ निकला। उसके निकलते ही देवी ने अट्टहास करके खड्ग से उसका सिर काट डाला; तब वह भूमि पर गिर पड़ा।
शूलहस्तं समायान्तं निशुम्भममरार्दनम् । हृदि विव्याध शूलेन वेगाविद्धेन चण्डिका ॥
śūlahastaṃ samāyāntaṃ niśumbhamamarārdanam hṛdi vivyādha śūlena vegāviddhena caṇḍikā
