भर्तृहरि के नीतिशतक का यह प्रिय श्लोक सिखाता है कि विनम्रता ही महानता का सहज लक्षण है। जैसे फलों से लदे वृक्ष झुक जाते हैं और जल से भरे मेघ पृथ्वी की ओर झुकते हैं, वैसे ही सच्चे सज्जन और परोपकारी लोग समृद्धि बढ़ने पर अधिक नम्र होते हैं, अहंकारी नहीं। यह संस्कृत साहित्य में समृद्धि, उदारता और विनम्रता के सम्बन्ध का सर्वाधिक उद्धृत दृष्टान्त है।

In his Niti Shataka, Bhartrhari repeatedly praises the character of the sajjana, the truly good person. Here he turns to nature for his lesson: the heavily fruiting tree and the water-bearing cloud both bend humbly toward the earth. From these images he draws the principle that the benevolent grow more modest as they grow more prosperous, making humility the very signature of a generous soul.

अर्थ:वृक्ष फलों के भार से झुक जाते हैं; नवीन जल से भरे हुए मेघ पृथ्वी की ओर झुककर नीचे आ जाते हैं; और सज्जन पुरुष समृद्धि पाकर भी अनुद्धत (अहंकाररहित) बने रहते हैं — क्योंकि यह विनम्रता ही परोपकारी जनों का सहज स्वभाव है। भर्तृहरि प्रकृति का दृष्टान्त देकर दिखाते हैं कि सच्ची महानता अहंकार से नहीं, बल्कि नम्रता से प्रकट होती है।
