✦ अर्थ
शाकम्भरी ('शाक धारण करने वाली') देवी दुर्गा का पोषण-स्वरूप है, जो देवी महात्म्य एवं देवी भागवत के अनुसार महान् अकाल के समय प्रकट हुईं और अपने शरीर से उत्पन्न शाक, फल एवं औषधियों से समस्त प्राणियों का भरण-पोषण किया तथा दुर्गम नामक असुर का वध किया। यह स्तोत्र उन्हें शताक्षी (सौ नेत्रों वाली) माता के रूप में नमन करता है, जो क्षुधा, भय और अभाव को दूर कर पोषण और मङ्गल प्रदान करती हैं। दक्षिण में वे बनशंकरी के रूप में पूजित हैं।

The Devi Mahatmya foretells that the Goddess will incarnate as Shakambhari: 'Then I shall nourish the whole world with the life-sustaining vegetables born from my own body, until the rains come; I shall be famed on earth as Shakambhari.' When a hundred-year drought struck and beings perished of hunger, the Mother, moved to tears (becoming Shatakshi), appeared and produced fruits, roots and herbs to feed all, and slew the tormenting demon Durgama. This stotram celebrates that compassionate, nourishing form of Durga.

It is told that during the great drought, the very moment the Goddess manifested as Shakambhari, the parched earth grew green with vegetables, fruits and grain springing from her body, ending the famine and restoring life — a grace devotees still invoke for sustenance and plenty.

अर्थ:हे शाकम्भरी, शिवे, धात्री, दुर्गे, रक्षा करने वाली — मैं आपको नमन करता हूँ, जो जगत् की धारिणी, सबकी शरण और भक्तों पर वत्सल हैं।
या देवी सर्वभूतानां क्षुधां शान्तिं करोति च। फलमूलाशनैर्नित्यं ताम्बके प्रणमाम्यहम्॥२॥

अर्थ:जो देवी समस्त प्राणियों की क्षुधा को शान्त करती हैं, फल-मूल आदि अन्न से उन्हें सदा पोषित करती हैं — हे अम्बे, उन्हें मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ।
नीलोत्पलदलश्यामां पद्मपत्रनिभेक्षणाम्। शताक्षीं वरदां शान्तां शाकम्भरीं नमाम्यहम्॥३॥

अर्थ:नील कमल के दल के समान श्यामवर्णा, कमल-पत्र सदृश नेत्रों वाली, शताक्षी, वरदायिनी, शान्तस्वरूपा — उन शाकम्भरी को मैं नमन करता हूँ।
त्रिनेत्रां चन्द्रवदनां शूलहस्तां वरप्रदाम्। शाकम्भरीं जगन्मातां वन्दे दुर्गां भयापहाम्॥४॥

अर्थ:त्रिनेत्रा, चन्द्र के समान मुख वाली, हाथ में शूल धारण करने वाली, वरप्रदा — जगन्माता, भय का नाश करने वाली दुर्गा शाकम्भरी की मैं वन्दना करता हूँ।
दुर्गमासुरसंहन्त्रीं भक्तानामभयप्रदाम्। लोकमातां नमस्यामि शाकम्भरीं शुभप्रदाम्॥५॥

Offering food to the needy after the recitation is a cherished part of her worship, reflecting her nature as the nourisher of all.
