The Shiv Chalisa follows the Chalisa tradition popularized by Tulsidas, but its specific authorship is debated. It describes Lord Shiva in his complete form — the ascetic who is also the householder, the destroyer who is also the creator, the fierce one who is also compassionate. The narrative draws from the Shiva Purana, referencing his destruction of Tripurasur, his role in the Samudra Manthan (ocean churning), and his eternal dance of creation and dissolution.

The Shiva Purana narrates that when the poison Halahala emerged during the churning of the cosmic ocean, threatening to destroy all creation, neither gods nor demons could contain it. Lord Shiva drank the entire poison to save the universe. Goddess Parvati pressed his throat to prevent it from entering his body, turning his throat blue — hence his name Neelkanth (Blue-Throated One). This act of self-sacrifice for all of creation is the ultimate demonstration of Shiva's compassion.

பொருள்:Opening Doha: Victory to Ganesh, son of Girija (Parvati), the wise root of all auspiciousness. Ayodhyadas says — grant us the boon of fearlessness.
॥ சௌபாஈ ॥ ஜய கிரிஜா பதி தீநதயாலா। ஸதா கரத ஸந்தந ப்ரதிபாலா॥

பொருள்:Victory to the Lord of Parvati, compassionate to the humble. You always protect the saints.
பால சந்த்ரமா ஸோஹத நீகே। காநந குண்டல நாகபநீ கே॥
Bhal Chandrama Sohat Neeke Kanan Kundal Nagphani Ke
பொருள்:The crescent moon adorns your forehead beautifully. Your earrings are serpent hoods.
அம்க கௌர ஶிர கம்க பஹாயே। முண்டமால தந சார லகாயே॥
Ang Gaur Shir Gang Bahaye Mundmal Tan Chhar Lagaye
பொருள்:Your body is fair, the Ganga flows from your head. You wear a garland of skulls and smear ash on your body.
வஸ்த்ர கால பாகம்பர ஸோஹே। சவி கோ தேக நாக முநி மோஹே॥
Vastra Khal Baghambr Sohe Chhavi Ko Dekh Naag Muni Mohe
பொருள்:You are adorned in tiger skin. Seeing your beauty, even serpents and sages are enchanted.
மைநா மாது கீ ஹவை துலாரீ। வாம அம்க ஸோஹத சவி ந்யாரீ॥
Maina Matu Ki Havai Dulari Vam Ang Sohat Chhavi Nyari
பொருள்:Parvati, the beloved daughter of Maina, sits at your left side in unique splendor.
கர த்ரிஶூல ஸோஹத சவி பாரீ। கரத ஸதா ஶத்ருந க்ஷயகாரீ॥
Kar Trishul Sohat Chhavi Bhari Karat Sada Shatrun Kshayakari
பொருள்:The trident in your hand looks magnificent. You constantly destroy all enemies.
நந்தி கணேஶ ஸோஹத தஹம் கைஸே। ஸாகர மத்ய கமல ஹைம் ஜைஸே॥
Nandi Ganesh Sohat Tahan Kaise Sagar Madhya Kamal Hain Jaise
பொருள்:Nandi and Ganesh sit beside you, like lotuses in the middle of an ocean.
கார்திக ஶ்யாம ஔர கணராஊ। யா சவி கோ கஹி ஜாத ந காஊ॥
Kartik Shyam Aur Ganrau Ya Chhavi Ko Kahi Jaat Na Kau
பொருள்:Kartikeya, the dark one, and lord Ganesha — no one can describe this divine vision.
தேவந ஜபஹீம் ஜாய புகாரா। தபஹீம் துக ப்ரபு ஆப நிவாரா॥
Devan Jabahi Jaay Pukara Tabahi Dukh Prabhu Aap Nivara
பொருள்:Whenever the gods come crying to you, you immediately remove their sorrows.
கியா உபத்ரவ தாரக பாரீ। தேவந ஸப மிலி துமஹிம் ஜுஹாரீ॥
Kiya Upadrav Tarak Bhari Devan Sab Mili Tumhi Juhari
பொருள்:When the demon Tarak caused great havoc, all the gods together came to pray to you.
துரத ஷடாநந ஆப படாயஊ। லவநிமேஷ மஹம் மாரி கிராயஊ॥
Turat Shadanan Aap Pathayau Lav Nimesh Mahan Maari Girayau
பொருள்:You immediately sent your six-faced son (Kartikeya). In the blink of an eye, he slew and felled the demon.
ஆப ஜலந்தர அஸுர ஸம்ஹாரா। ஸுயஶ தும்ஹார விதித ஸம்ஸாரா॥
Aap Jalandhar Asur Samhara Suyash Tumhar Vidit Sansara
பொருள்:You yourself destroyed the demon Jalandhar. Your glory is known throughout the world.
த்ரிபுராஸுர ஸந யுத்த மசாஈ। ஸபஹிம் க்ரு'பா கரி லீந பசாஈ॥
Tripurasur San Yuddh Machai Sabhi Kripa Kari Leen Bachai
பொருள்:You waged war against the demon Tripurasur. With your grace, you saved everyone.
கியா தபஹிம் பாகீரத பாரீ। புரப ப்ரதிஜ்ஞா தாஸு புராரீ॥
Kiya Tapahi Bhagirath Bhari Purab Pratigya Tasu Purari
பொருள்:Bhagirath performed great penance. You fulfilled his ancient vow, O Lord.
தாநிந மஹம் தும ஸம கோஉ நாஹீம்। ஸேவக ஸ்துதி கரத ஸதாஹீம்॥
Danin Mahan Tum Sam Kou Nahin Sevak Stuti Karat Sadahin
பொருள்:Among the generous, none equals you. Your devotees always sing your praises.
வேத நாம மஹிமா தவ காஈம்। அகத அநாதி பேத நஹிம் பாஈம்॥
Ved Naam Mahima Tav Gayin Akath Anadi Bhed Nahin Payin
பொருள்:The Vedas sing the glory of your name. Indescribable, beginningless — they cannot fathom your mystery.
ப்ரகட உததி மம்தந மேம் ஜ்வாலா। ஜரத ஸுராஸுர பஏ பிஹாலா॥
Pragat Udadhi Manthan Mein Jwala Jarat Surasur Bhaye Bihala
பொருள்:During the churning of the ocean, terrible poison emerged. Both gods and demons were distraught as it burned.
கீந்ஹ தயா தஹம் கரீ ஸஹாஈ। நீலகம்ட தப நாம கஹாஈ॥
Keenh Daya Tahan Kari Sahai Neelkanth Tab Naam Kahai
பொருள்:You showed mercy and came to their aid. Then you were called Neelkanth (the blue-throated one).
பூஜந ராமசந்த்ர ஜப கீந்ஹா। ஜீத கே லம்க விபீஷண தீந்ஹா॥
Poojan Ramchandra Jab Keenha Jeet Ke Lanka Vibheeshan Deenha
பொருள்:When Lord Ramchandra performed your worship, he conquered Lanka and gave it to Vibhishana.
ஸஹஸ கமல மேம் ஹோ ரஹே தாரீ। கீந்ஹ பரீக்ஷா தபஹிம் புராரீ॥
Sahas Kamal Mein Ho Rahe Dhari Keenh Pariksha Tabahi Purari
பொருள்:Ram was offering a thousand lotuses to you. Then you, O Lord, tested his devotion.
ஏக கமல ப்ரபு ராகேஉ ஜோஈ। கமல நயந பூஜந சஹம் ஸோஈ॥
Ek Kamal Prabhu Rakheu Joi Kamal Nayan Poojan Chaha Soi
பொருள்:You hid one lotus. Ram offered his own lotus-like eye in its place.
கடிந பக்தி தேகீ ப்ரபு ஶம்கர। பஏ ப்ரஸந்ந திஏ இச்சித வர॥
Kathin Bhakti Dekhi Prabhu Shankar Bhaye Prasanna Diye Ichchhit Var
பொருள்:Seeing such intense devotion, Lord Shankar was pleased and granted him the desired boon.
ஜய ஜய ஜய அநந்த அவிநாஶீ। கரத க்ரு'பா ஸபகே கடவாஸீ॥
Jai Jai Jai Anant Avinashi Karat Kripa Sabke Ghatvasi
பொருள்:Victory, victory, victory to the infinite and imperishable! You dwell in all hearts and shower grace upon everyone.
துஷ்ட ஸகல மோஹிம் நித ஸதாவைம்। ப்ரமத ரஹஉம் மோஹிம் சைந ந ஆவை॥
Dusht Sakal Mohi Nit Satavain Bhramat Rahau Mohi Chain Na Aavai
பொருள்:Wicked people torment me constantly. I wander restlessly with no peace.
த்ராஹி த்ராஹி மைம் நாத புகாரோ। யஹி அவஸர மோஹிம் ஆந உபாரோ॥
Trahi Trahi Main Naath Pukaro Yahi Avasar Mohi Aan Ubaro
பொருள்:I cry out — save me, save me, O Lord! At this moment, come and rescue me.
லை த்ரிஶூல ஶத்ருந கோ மாரோ। ஸம்கட ஸே மோஹிம் ஆந உபாரோ॥
Lai Trishul Shatrun Ko Maro Sankat Se Mohi Aan Ubaro
பொருள்:Take up your trident and destroy my enemies. Rescue me from this crisis.
மாத பிதா ப்ராதா ஸப கோஈ। ஸம்கட மேம் பூசத நஹிம் கோஈ॥
Maat Pita Bhrata Sab Koi Sankat Mein Poochhat Nahin Koi
பொருள்:Mother, father, brothers — everyone — in times of trouble, no one asks about me.
ஸ்வாமீ ஏக ஹை ஆஸ தும்ஹாரீ। ஆய ஹரஹு அப ஸம்கட பாரீ॥
Swami Ek Hai Aas Tumhari Aay Harahu Ab Sankat Bhari
பொருள்:O Lord, my only hope is in you. Come now and remove this great difficulty.
தாம தும்ஹாரோ கைலாஶ ஹை பாரீ। ஸப ஜக ஜாநத ஸுந்தர ந்யாரீ॥
Dham Tumharo Kailash Hai Bhari Sab Jag Janat Sundar Nyari
பொருள்:Your abode is the mighty Kailash. The whole world knows its incomparable beauty.
நந்தீ ப்ரு'ம்கீ ஸதா ஸோஹாரீ। கரத பஜந ப்ரஹ்ம ஸுகுமாரீ॥
Nandi Bhringi Sada Sohari Karat Bhajan Brahm Sukumari
பொருள்:Nandi and Bhringi are always delighted there. Brahma and other gods perform worship.
கம்சந குண்டல கர்ணந ஶோபே। தேவதா தர்ஶந கோ அதி லோபே॥
Kanchan Kundal Karnan Shobhe Devta Darshan Ko Ati Lobhe
பொருள்:Golden earrings adorn your ears beautifully. The gods are eager to behold you.
ப்ரஸந்ந சித ஹோஇ ஶம்பு ஶூலா। பாம்ட தே ஸபகோ அமர பலா॥
Prasanna Chit Hoi Shambhu Shoola Bant De Sabko Amar Phala
பொருள்:When Lord Shambhu is pleased in his heart, he distributes the immortal fruit to all.
நாகபாஶ லபேட ஶரீரா। ஐஸே ஶோபித த்ரிபுராரீ வீரா॥
Nagpash Lapet Sharira Aise Shobhit Tripurari Veera
பொருள்:Serpents are wrapped around your body. Thus adorned, O brave Tripurari, you shine.
கரத ஸதா ஶத்ருந க்ஷயகாரீ। தேவதாஓம் கே ஸதா ஸுககாரீ॥
Karat Sada Shatrun Kshayakari Devtaon Ke Sada Sukhkari
பொருள்:You always destroy enemies. You always bring happiness to the gods.
ஶிவ சாலீஸா ஜோ கோஈ காவே। ஸப ஸுக ஸம்பத்தி கர ஆவே॥
Shiv Chalisa Jo Koi Gaave Sab Sukh Sampatti Ghar Aave
பொருள்:Whoever sings this Shiv Chalisa, all happiness and prosperity comes to their home.
காஶீ மேம் விராஜத ஶம்பு ஶம்கர। ஆரதீ ஹோத ஸதா ஜய கர॥
Kashi Mein Virajat Shambhu Shankar Aarti Hot Sada Jai Kar
பொருள்:In Kashi, Lord Shambhu Shankar resides. His aarti is performed with triumphant celebration always.
விஶ்வநாத தரபார ஹை பாரீ। ஜஹாம் பஸத தீநோம் த்ரிபுராரீ॥
Vishwanath Darbar Hai Bhari Jahan Basat Teeno Tripurari
பொருள்:The court of Vishwanath is magnificent. There the Lord of the three worlds dwells.
தஶரத ஏக அசம்போ தேகா। ஶம்பு விவாஹ மநோஹர பேகா॥
Dashrath Ek Achambho Dekha Shambhu Vivah Manohar Pekha
பொருள்:Dashrath witnessed a wondrous sight — the beautiful and enchanting wedding of Lord Shambhu.
ஸுந்தரதாஸ ஜ்ஞாந நஹிம் பாயோ। ஶிவ சாலீஸா அல்ப பநாயோ॥
Sundardas Gyan Nahin Payo Shiv Chalisa Alp Banayo
பொருள்:Sundardas says he has not attained full knowledge, and has composed this humble Shiv Chalisa.
ஜோ யஹ பட़ே மஹேஶ்வர பூஜா। உஸகீ கடிந கபீ நஹிம் தூஜா॥
Jo Yah Padhe Maheshwar Pooja Uski Kathin Kabhi Nahin Dooja
பொருள்:Whoever reads this worship of Maheshwar, no difficulty can ever touch them.
॥ தோஹா ॥ மம்த்ர தம்த்ர விஜ்ஞாந கே ஜோ குச ஹோவே ஸார। ஶிவ ஶிவ ஶிவ ஸத்ய ஹை ஶிவ கா நாம அபார॥

பொருள்:Closing Doha: Of all mantras, tantras and sciences — whatever essence exists — Shiva, Shiva, Shiva is the truth. The name of Shiva is infinite.

शिव चालीसा பாராயண முறை
Sit before a Shiva Lingam or image. Light a diya with ghee. Offer bilva leaves and water. Chant 11 times on Mondays for regular practice. During Shravan month (July-August), daily recitation is especially powerful. The Shiv Chalisa can be followed by chanting 'Om Namah Shivaya' 108 times for deeper devotion.
