The Lakshmi Chalisa is a forty-verse Hindi hymn to Mahalakshmi, the goddess of wealth and fortune who arose from the churning of the ocean of milk as the beloved of Vishnu. It recalls how, age after age, she accompanies the Lord in each incarnation — as Sita beside Rama — and promises abundance, health and joy to all who worship her with a devoted, contented heart.

The Chalisa itself records the promise that the sonless, the poor, even the blind, deaf and afflicted who have it recited with faith for forty days find their distress removed and prosperity restored. Generations of households across India light the Friday and Diwali lamp and recite these verses, trusting Lakshmi's age-old assurance: worship her, and no lack will ever come.

ଅର୍ଥ:O Mother Lakshmi, show your grace and dwell within my heart; fulfil my heart's desires and complete my every hope.
ଯହୀ ମୋର ଅରଦାସ, ହାଥ ଜୋଡ଼ ଵିନତୀ କରୋଂ। ସବ ଵିଧି କରହୁ ସୁଵାସ, ଜଯ ଜନନି ଜଗଦଂବିକା॥

ଅର୍ଥ:This is my one prayer, offered with folded hands: in every way bring auspiciousness, O victorious Mother of the world, Jagadambika.
ସିଂଧୁ ସୁତା ଵିଷ୍ଣୁପ୍ରିଯେ ନତ ଶିର ବାରଂବାର । ଋଦ୍ଧି ସିଦ୍ଧି ମଂଗଲପ୍ରଦେ ନତ ଶିର ବାରଂବାର ॥

ଅର୍ଥ:O daughter of the ocean, beloved of Vishnu, again and again I bow my head; O giver of prosperity, perfection and every blessing, again and again I bow.
ସିନ୍ଧୁ ସୁତା ମୈଂ ସୁମିରୌଂ ତୋହୀ । ଜ୍ଞାନ ବୁଦ୍ଧି ଵିଦ୍ଯା ଦୋ ମୋହି ॥
Sindhu suta maim sumiraum tohi Jnana buddhi vidya do mohi
ଅର୍ଥ:O daughter of the ocean, I remember you; grant me knowledge, intellect and learning.
ତୁମ ସମାନ ନହିଂ କୋଈ ଉପକାରୀ । ସବ ଵିଧି ପୁରବହୁ ଆସ ହମାରୀ ॥
Tuma samana nahim koi upakari Saba vidhi purabahu asa hamari
ଅର୍ଥ:There is no benefactor equal to you; in every way fulfil our hopes.
ଜୈ ଜୈ ଜଗତ ଜନନି ଜଗଦମ୍ବା । ସବକେ ତୁମହୀ ହୋ ସ୍ଵଲମ୍ବା ॥
Jai jai jagata janani jagadamba Sabake tumahi ho svalamba
ଅର୍ଥ:Victory, victory, O Mother of the world, Jagadamba; you are the support of all.
ତୁମ ହୀ ହୋ ଘଟ ଘଟ କେ ଵାସୀ । ଵିନତୀ ଯହୀ ହମାରୀ ଖାସୀ ॥
Tuma hi ho ghata ghata ke vasi Vinati yahi hamari khasi
ଅର୍ଥ:You dwell within every single heart; this is our heartfelt prayer to you.
ଜଗ ଜନନୀ ଜଯ ସିନ୍ଧୁ କୁମାରୀ । ଦୀନନ କୀ ତୁମ ହୋ ହିତକାରୀ ॥
Jaga janani jaya sindhu kumari Dinana ki tuma ho hitakari
ଅର୍ଥ:O Mother of the world, victory, O daughter of the ocean; you are the benefactor of the lowly.
ଵିନଵୌଂ ନିତ୍ଯ ତୁମହିଂ ମହାରାନୀ । କୃପା କରୌ ଜଗ ଜନନି ଭଵାନୀ ॥
Vinavaum nitya tumahim maharani Kripa karau jaga janani bhavani
ଅର୍ଥ:I pray to you daily, O great queen; show your grace, O Mother of the world, Bhavani.
କେହି ଵିଧି ସ୍ତୁତି କରୌଂ ତିହାରୀ । ସୁଧି ଲୀଜୈ ଅପରାଧ ବିସାରୀ ॥
Kehi vidhi stuti karaum tihari Sudhi lijai aparadha bisari
ଅର୍ଥ:In what way shall I praise you? Take heed of me and overlook my faults.
କୃପା ଦୃଷ୍ଟି ଚିତଵୋ ମମ ଓରୀ । ଜଗତ ଜନନି ଵିନତୀ ସୁନ ମୋରୀ ॥
Kripa drishti chitavo mama ori Jagata janani vinati suna mori
ଅର୍ଥ:Cast your gracious glance upon me; O Mother of the world, hear my prayer.
ଜ୍ଞାନ ବୁଦ୍ଧି ଜଯ ସୁଖ କୀ ଦାତା । ସଂକଟ ହରୋ ହମାରୀ ମାତା ॥
Jnana buddhi jaya sukha ki data Samkata haro hamari mata
ଅର୍ଥ:O giver of knowledge, intellect, victory and joy; remove our distress, O Mother.
କ୍ଷୀର ସିଂଧୁ ଜବ ଵିଷ୍ଣୁ ମଥାଯୋ । ଚୌଦହ ରତ୍ନ ସିଂଧୁ ମେଂ ପାଯୋ ॥
Kshira simdhu jaba vishnu mathayo Chaudaha ratna simdhu mem payo
ଅର୍ଥ:When Vishnu churned the ocean of milk, fourteen jewels were found in the sea.
ଚୌଦହ ରତ୍ନ ମେଂ ତୁମ ସୁଖରାସୀ । ସେଵା କିଯୋ ପ୍ରଭୁହିଂ ବନି ଦାସୀ ॥
Chaudaha ratna mem tuma sukharasi Seva kiyo prabhuhim bani dasi
ଅର୍ଥ:Among the fourteen jewels you were the very treasure of joy; you served the Lord, becoming his consort.
ଜବ ଜବ ଜନ୍ମ ଜହାଂ ପ୍ରଭୁ ଲୀନ୍ହା । ରୂପ ବଦଲ ତହଂ ସେଵା କୀନ୍ହା ॥
Jaba jaba janma jaham prabhu linha Rupa badala taham seva kinha
ଅର୍ଥ:Wherever and whenever the Lord took birth, changing your form, you served him there.
ସ୍ଵଯଂ ଵିଷ୍ଣୁ ଜବ ନର ତନୁ ଧାରା । ଲୀନ୍ହେଉ ଅଵଧପୁରୀ ଅଵତାରା ॥
Svayam vishnu jaba nara tanu dhara Linheu avadhapuri avatara
ଅର୍ଥ:When Vishnu himself took a human body, he incarnated at Avadhpuri (as Rama).
ତବ ତୁମ ପ୍ରକଟ ଜନକପୁର ମାହୀଂ । ସେଵା କିଯୋ ହୃଦଯ ପୁଲକାହୀଂ ॥
Taba tuma prakata janakapura mahim Seva kiyo hridaya pulakahim
ଅର୍ଥ:Then you appeared in Janakpur (as Sita) and served him with a heart full of joy.
ଅପନାଯୋ ତୋହି ଅନ୍ତର୍ଯାମୀ । ଵିଶ୍ଵ ଵିଦିତ ତ୍ରିଭୁଵନ କୀ ସ୍ଵାମୀ ॥
Apanayo tohi antaryami Vishva vidita tribhuvana ki svami
ଅର୍ଥ:The inner-knower made you his own; you are renowned through the world as the mistress of the three realms.
ତୁମ ସବ ପ୍ରବଲ ଶକ୍ତି ନହିଂ ଆନୀ । କହଂ ତକ ମହିମା କହୌଂ ବଖାନୀ ॥
Tuma saba prabala shakti nahim ani Kahan taka mahima kahaum bakhani
ଅର୍ଥ:None can match your mighty power; how far can I tell and describe your glory?
ମନ କ୍ରମ ଵଚନ କରୈ ସେଵକାଈ । ମନ-ଇଚ୍ଛିତ ଵାଂଛିତ ଫଲ ପାଈ ॥
Mana krama vachana karai sevakai Mana-ichchhita vamchhita phala pai
ଅର୍ଥ:Whoever serves you in thought, deed and word obtains the desired and longed-for fruit.
ତଜି ଛଲ କପଟ ଔର ଚତୁରାଈ । ପୂଜହିଂ ଵିଵିଧ ଭାଂତି ମନ ଲାଈ ॥
Taji chhala kapata aura chaturai Pujahim vividha bhanti mana lai
ଅର୍ଥ:Forsaking deceit, cunning and trickery, they worship you in many ways with a devoted heart.
ଔର ହାଲ ମୈଂ କହୌଂ ବୁଝାଈ । ଜୋ ଯହ ପାଠ କରେ ମନ ଲାଈ ॥
Aura hala maim kahaum bujhai Jo yaha patha kare mana lai
ଅର୍ଥ:And I tell you another truth: whoever recites this with a devoted mind —
ତାକୋ କୋଈ କଷ୍ଟ ନ ହୋଈ । ମନ ଇଚ୍ଛିତ ଫଲ ପାଵୈ ଫଲ ସୋଈ ॥
Tako koi kashta na hoi Mana ichchhita phala pavai phala soi
ଅର୍ଥ:— no suffering befalls them; they obtain the very fruit their heart desires.
ତ୍ରାହି-ତ୍ରାହି ଜଯ ଦୁଃଖ ନିଵାରିଣୀ । ତ୍ରିଵିଧ ତାପ ଭଵ ବଂଧନ ହାରିଣି ॥
Trahi-trahi jaya duhkha nivarini Trividha tapa bhava bamdhana harini
ଅର୍ଥ:'Save us, save us!' — victory, O remover of sorrow, destroyer of the three-fold afflictions and the bonds of existence.
ଜୋ ଯହ ଚାଲୀସା ପଢ़େ ଔର ପଢ़ାଵେ । ଇସେ ଧ୍ଯାନ ଲଗାକର ସୁନେ ସୁନାଵୈ ॥
Jo yaha chalisa padha़e aura padha़ave Ise dhyana lagakara sune sunavai
ଅର୍ଥ:Whoever reads this Chalisa and has it read, and listens and recites it with meditative attention —
ତାକୋ କୋଈ ନ ରୋଗ ସତାଵୈ । ପୁତ୍ର ଆଦି ଧନ ସମ୍ପତ୍ତି ପାଵୈ ॥
Tako koi na roga satavai Putra adi dhana sampatti pavai
ଅର୍ଥ:— no disease torments them; they obtain children, wealth and prosperity.
ପୁତ୍ର ହୀନ ଔର ସମ୍ପତ୍ତି ହୀନା । ଅନ୍ଧା ବଧିର କୋଢ़ୀ ଅତି ଦୀନା ॥
Putra hina aura sampatti hina Andha badhira kodha़i ati dina
ଅର୍ଥ:The one without a son and without wealth, the blind, the deaf, the leper, the utterly wretched —
ଵିପ୍ର ବୋଲାଯ କୈ ପାଠ କରାଵୈ । ଶଂକା ଦିଲ ମେଂ କଭୀ ନ ଲାଵୈ ॥
Vipra bolaya kai patha karavai Shamka dila mem kabhi na lavai
ଅର୍ଥ:— let them call a brahmin and have it recited, never harbouring doubt in the heart.
ପାଠ କରାଵୈ ଦିନ ଚାଲୀସା । ତା ପର କୃପା କରୈଂ ଗୌରୀସା ॥
Patha karavai dina chalisa Ta para kripa karaim gaurisa
ଅର୍ଥ:Have the Chalisa recited for forty days, and Gaurisha (Shiva) and the Mother will show their grace.
ସୁଖ ସମ୍ପତ୍ତି ବହୁତ ସୀ ପାଵୈ । କମୀ ନହୀଂ କାହୂ କୀ ଆଵୈ ॥
Sukha sampatti bahuta si pavai Kami nahim kahu ki avai
ଅର୍ଥ:They obtain abundant happiness and wealth; no lack ever comes to them.
ବାରହ ମାସ କରୈ ଜୋ ପୂଜା । ତେହି ସମ ଧନ୍ଯ ଔର ନହିଂ ଦୂଜା ॥
Baraha masa karai jo puja Tehi sama dhanya aura nahim duja
ଅର୍ଥ:Whoever performs the worship for twelve months — none is more blessed than they.
ପ୍ରତିଦିନ ପାଠ କରୈ ମନ ମାହୀଂ । ଉନ ସମ କୋଈ ଜଗ ମେଂ ନାହିଂ ॥
Pratidina patha karai mana mahim Una sama koi jaga mem nahim
ଅର୍ଥ:Whoever recites it daily within the heart — none in the world is their equal.
ବହୁ ଵିଧି କ୍ଯା ମୈଂ କରୌଂ ବଡ़ାଈ । ଲେଯ ପରୀକ୍ଷା ଧ୍ଯାନ ଲଗାଈ ॥
Bahu vidhi kya maim karaum bada़ai Leya pariksha dhyana lagai
ଅର୍ଥ:In how many ways shall I sing your praise? Put it to the test, fixing your mind in meditation.
କରି ଵିଶ୍ଵାସ କରୈଂ ଵ୍ରତ ନେମା । ହୋଯ ସିଦ୍ଧ ଉପଜୈ ଉର ପ୍ରେମା ॥
Kari vishvasa karaim vrata nema Hoya siddha upajai ura prema
ଅର୍ଥ:Whoever keeps the vow with faith and discipline attains fulfilment, and love springs up in the heart.
ଜଯ ଜଯ ଜଯ ଲକ୍ଷ୍ମୀ ମହାରାନୀ । ସବ ମେଂ ଵ୍ଯାପିତ ଜୋ ଗୁଣ ଖାନୀ ॥
Jaya jaya jaya lakshmi maharani Saba mem vyapita jo guna khani
ଅର୍ଥ:Victory, victory, victory, O Queen Lakshmi, the mine of all virtues who pervades everything.
ତୁମ୍ହରୋ ତେଜ ପ୍ରବଲ ଜଗ ମାହୀଂ । ତୁମ ସମ କୋଉ ଦଯାଲ କହୂଂ ନାହୀଂ ॥
Tumharo teja prabala jaga mahim Tuma sama kou dayala kahun nahim
ଅର୍ଥ:Your splendour is mighty in the world; nowhere is anyone as compassionate as you.
ମୋହି ଅନାଥ କୀ ସୁଧି ଅବ ଲୀଜୈ । ସଂକଟ କାଟି ଭକ୍ତି ମୋହି ଦୀଜେ ॥
Mohi anatha ki sudhi aba lijai Samkata kati bhakti mohi dije
ଅର୍ଥ:Take heed now of me, the orphan; cut away my distress and grant me devotion.
ଭୂଲ ଚୂକ କରୀ କ୍ଷମା ହମାରୀ । ଦର୍ଶନ ଦୀଜୈ ଦଶା ନିହାରୀ ॥
Bhula chuka kari kshama hamari Darshana dijai dasha nihari
ଅର୍ଥ:Forgive my errors and mistakes; grant me your darshan, beholding my condition.
ବିନ ଦରଶନ ଵ୍ଯାକୁଲ ଅଧିକାରୀ । ତୁମହିଂ ଅକ୍ଷତ ଦୁଃଖ ସହତେ ଭାରୀ ॥
Bina darashana vyakula adhikari Tumahim akshata duhkha sahate bhari
ଅର୍ଥ:Without your vision the devotee is distraught; in your absence I bear grievous sorrow.
ନହିଂ ମୋହିଂ ଜ୍ଞାନ ବୁଦ୍ଧି ହୈ ତନ ମେଂ । ସବ ଜାନତ ହୋ ଅପନେ ମନ ମେଂ ॥
Nahim mohim jnana buddhi hai tana mem Saba janata ho apane mana mem
ଅର୍ଥ:I have no knowledge or intellect within me; you know everything in your own mind.
ରୂପ ଚତୁର୍ଭୁଜ କରକେ ଧାରଣ । କଷ୍ଟ ମୋର ଅବ କରହୁ ନିଵାରଣ ॥
Rupa chaturbhuja karake dharana Kashta mora aba karahu nivarana
ଅର୍ଥ:Bearing your four-armed form, now remove my every suffering.
କହି ପ୍ରକାର ମୈଂ କରୌଂ ବଡ़ାଈ । ଜ୍ଞାନ ବୁଦ୍ଧି ମୋହିଂ ନହିଂ ଅଧିକାଈ ॥
Kahi prakara maim karaum bada़ai Jnana buddhi mohim nahim adhikai
ଅର୍ଥ:In what way shall I sing your greatness? I have no great knowledge or wit.
ରାମଦାସ ଅବ କହୈ ପୁକାରୀ । କରୋ ଦୂର ତୁମ ଵିପତି ହମାରୀ ॥
Ramadasa aba kahai pukari Karo dura tuma vipati hamari
ଅର୍ଥ:Ramdas now calls out and prays: drive far away our every calamity, O Mother.
ତ୍ରାହି ତ୍ରାହି ଦୁଃଖ ହାରିଣୀ ହରୋ ବେଗି ସବ ତ୍ରାସ । ଜଯତି ଜଯତି ଜଯ ଲକ୍ଷ୍ମୀ କରୋ ଶତ୍ରୁନ କା ନାଶ ॥
Trahi trahi duhkha harini haro begi saba trasa Jayati jayati jaya lakshmi karo shatruna ka nasha
ଅର୍ଥ:Save us, save us, O remover of sorrow! Swiftly remove all our fear; victory, victory, O Lakshmi, destroy our foes.
ରାମଦାସ ଧରି ଧ୍ଯାନ ନିତ ଵିନଯ କରତ କର ଜୋର । ମାତୁ ଲକ୍ଷ୍ମୀ ଦାସ ପର କରହୁ ଦଯା କୀ କୋର ॥

ଅର୍ଥ:Ramdas ever meditates and prays with folded hands: O Mother Lakshmi, show but a measure of grace upon your servant.

लक्ष्मी चालीसा ପାଠର ଲାଭ
Daily recitation of the Lakshmi Chalisa invokes the grace of Goddess Lakshmi for wealth, prosperity and abundance.
Said to remove poverty, debt and lack, and to bring children, health and lasting good fortune.
Especially powerful on Fridays and during Diwali, when Lakshmi is worshipped.
The Chalisa promises that one who recites it for forty days, or worships for twelve months, gains abundant wealth with no lack.

लक्ष्मी चालीसा ପାଠ ବିଧି
On Friday or at Diwali, after bathing, sit before an image of Goddess Lakshmi. Light a ghee lamp, offer red flowers, kumkum, rice and sweets, and recite the opening doha and the forty chaupais with devotion. The Chalisa recommends recitation for forty days, or worship through the year, for her full grace. Conclude with the Lakshmi aarti.
