This gentle verse belongs to the daily pratah-smarana — the prayers said on waking. Before stepping out of bed, the devotee addresses the Earth as a living goddess, Bhudevi, robed in the seas and adorned with mountains, the beloved consort of Vishnu, and humbly asks her forgiveness for the unavoidable touch of human feet upon her sacred body. It expresses the deep Indian sentiment of revering the earth as Mother.
