Santoshi Mata, the Goddess of Contentment, rose to immense popularity across North India in the 20th century, especially after the 1975 film 'Jai Santoshi Maa'. Worshipped as the daughter of Ganesha and Riddhi-Siddhi, she is beloved for the simple Friday vrat — an offering of jaggery and chickpeas and a heart free of sourness and discontent. This Chalisa garlands her many forms across India's shrines and promises peace to all who take her refuge.

ಅರ್ಥ:I bow at the feet of Santoshi Mata, giver of prosperity and perfection; merely meditating on her, one crosses the ocean of sorrow.
ಭಕ್ತೋಂ ಕೋ ಸಂತೋಷ ದೇ ಸಂತೋಷೀ ತವ ನಾಮ। ಕೃಪಾ ಕರಹು ಜಗದಮ್ಬ ಅಬ ಆಯಾ ತೇರೇ ಧಾಮ॥

ಅರ್ಥ:Grant contentment to your devotees, O Santoshi, whose very name is solace; show your grace, O Mother of the world — I have come to your abode.
ಜಯ ಸನ್ತೋಷೀ ಮಾತ ಅನುಪಮ। ಶಾಂತಿ ದಾಯಿನೀ ರೂಪ ಮನೋರಮ॥

ಅರ್ಥ:Victory to Mother Santoshi, peerless one, of peace-giving and enchanting form.
ಸುನ್ದರ ವರಣ ಚತುರ್ಭುಜ ರೂಪ। ವೇಶ ಮನೋಹರ ಲಲಿತ ಅನುಪಾ॥

ಅರ್ಥ:Of fair complexion and four-armed form, of charming dress, graceful and unmatched.
ಶ್ವೇತಾಮ್ಬರ ರೂಪ ಮನಹಾರೀ। ಮಾಂ ತುಮ್ಹಾರೀ ಛವಿ ಜಗ ಸೇ ನ್ಯಾರೀ॥

ಅರ್ಥ:Robed in white, your form steals the heart; your image, O Mother, is unlike any in the world.
ದಿವ್ಯ ಸ್ವರೂಪಾ ಆಯತ ಲೋಚನ। ದರ್ಶನ ಸೇ ಹೋ ಸಂಕಟಮೋಚನ॥

ಅರ್ಥ:Of divine form and wide eyes — your mere sight dispels every distress.
ಜಯ ಗಣೇಶ ಕೀ ಸುತಾ ಭವಾನೀ। ರಿದ್ಧಿ- ಸಿದ್ಧಿ ಕೀ ಪುತ್ರೀ ಜ್ಞಾನೀ॥
Jaya ganesha ki suta bhavani Riddhi- siddhi ki putri jnani
ಅರ್ಥ:Victory, O daughter of Ganesha, O Bhavani; wise daughter of Riddhi and Siddhi.
ಅಗಮ ಅಗೋಚರ ತುಮ್ಹರೀ ಮಾಯಾ। ಸಬ ಪರ ಕರೋ ಕೃಪಾ ಕೀ ಛಾಯಾ॥
Agama agochara tumhari maya Saba para karo kripa ki chhaya
ಅರ್ಥ:Unfathomable and unseen is your power (Maya); cast the shade of your grace upon all.
ನಾಮ ಅನೇಕ ತುಮ್ಹಾರೇ ಮಾತಾ। ಅಖಿಲ ವಿಶ್ವ ಹೈ ತುಮಕೋ ಧ್ಯಾತಾ॥
Nama aneka tumhare mata Akhila vishva hai tumako dhyata
ಅರ್ಥ:Many are your names, O Mother; the whole universe meditates upon you.
ತುಮನೇ ರೂಪ ಅನೇಕೋಂ ಧಾರೇ। ಕೋ ಕಹಿ ಸಕೇ ಚರಿತ್ರ ತುಮ್ಹಾರೇ॥
Tumane rupa anekom dhare Ko kahi sake charitra tumhare
ಅರ್ಥ:You have assumed countless forms — who can tell of all your deeds?
ಧಾಮ ಅನೇಕ ಕಹಾಂ ತಕ ಕಹಿಯೇ। ಸುಮಿರನ ತಬ ಕರಕೇ ಸುಖ ಲಹಿಯೇ॥
Dhama aneka kahan taka kahiye Sumirana taba karake sukha lahiye
ಅರ್ಥ:How many of your abodes can one name? Remembering you, one gains happiness.
ವಿನ್ಧ್ಯಾಚಲ ಮೇಂ ವಿನ್ಧ್ಯವಾಸಿನೀ। ಕೋಟೇಶ್ವರ ಸರಸ್ವತೀ ಸುಹಾಸಿನೀ॥
Vindhyachala mem vindhyavasini Koteshvara sarasvati suhasini
ಅರ್ಥ:In the Vindhya hills you are Vindhyavasini; at Koteshwar, the fair-smiling Saraswati.
ಕಲಕತ್ತೇ ಮೇಂ ತೂ ಹೀ ಕಾಲೀ। ದುಷ್ಟ ನಾಶಿನೀ ಮಹಾಕರಾಲೀ॥
Kalakatte mem tu hi kali Dushta nashini mahakarali
ಅರ್ಥ:In Kolkata you yourself are Kali, the destroyer of the wicked, the greatly fearsome one.
ಸಮ್ಬಲ ಪುರ ಬಹುಚರಾ ಕಹಾತೀ। ಭಕ್ತಜನೋಂ ಕಾ ದುಖ ಮಿಟಾತೀ॥
Sambala pura bahuchara kahati Bhaktajanom ka dukha mitati
ಅರ್ಥ:At Sambalpur you are called Bahuchara, wiping away the sorrows of devotees.
ಜ್ವಾಲಾ ಜೀ ಮೇಂ ಜ್ವಾಲಾ ದೇವೀ। ಪೂಜತ ನಿತ್ಯ ಭಕ್ತ ಜನ ಸೇವೀ॥
Jvala ji mem jvala devi Pujata nitya bhakta jana sevi
ಅರ್ಥ:At Jwala Ji you are the Goddess of Flame, ever worshipped by faithful devotees.
ನಗರ ಬಮ್ಬಈ ಕೀ ಮಹಾರಾನೀ। ಮಹಾ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀ ತುಮ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣೀ॥
Nagara bambai ki maharani Maha lakshmi tuma kalyani
ಅರ್ಥ:You are the great queen of the city of Bombay, the auspicious Mahalakshmi.
ಮದುರಾ ಮೇಂ ಮೀನಾಕ್ಷೀ ತುಮ ಹೋ। ಸುಖ ದುಖ ಸಬಕೀ ಸಾಕ್ಷೀ ತುಮ ಹೋ॥
Madura mem minakshi tuma ho Sukha dukha sabaki sakshi tuma ho
ಅರ್ಥ:At Madurai you are Meenakshi; you are the witness of everyone's joys and sorrows.
ರಾಜನಗರ ಮೇಂ ತುಮ ಜಗದಮ್ಬೇ। ಬನೀ ಭದ್ರಕಾಲೀ ತುಮ ಅಮ್ಬೇ॥
Rajanagara mem tuma jagadambe Bani bhadrakali tuma ambe
ಅರ್ಥ:At Rajnagar you are Jagadamba; you became Bhadrakali, O Mother Amba.
ಪಾವಾಗಢ़ ಮೇಂ ದುರ್ಗಾ ಮಾತಾ। ಅಖಿಲ ವಿಶ್ವ ತೇರಾ ಯಶ ಗಾತಾ॥
Pavagadha़ mem durga mata Akhila vishva tera yasha gata
ಅರ್ಥ:At Pavagadh you are Durga Mata; the whole world sings your glory.
ಕಾಶೀಪುರಾಧೀಶ್ವರೀ ಮಾತಾ। ಅನ್ನಪೂರ್ಣಾ ನಾಮ ಸುಹಾತಾ॥
Kashipuradhishvari mata Annapurna nama suhata
ಅರ್ಥ:As ruler of Kashi you are Mother Annapurna, whose name is ever sweet.
ಸರ್ವಾನಂದ ಕರೋ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣೀ। ತುಮ್ಹೀಂ ಶಾರದಾ ಅಮೃತವಾಣೀ॥
Sarvanamda karo kalyani Tumhim sharada amritavani
ಅರ್ಥ:Bestow welfare on all, O auspicious one; you yourself are Sharada of nectar-speech.
ತುಮ್ಹರೀ ಮಹಿಮಾ ಜಲ ಮೇಂ ಥಲ ಮೇಂ। ದುಃಖ ದಾರಿದ್ರ ಸಬ ಮೇಟೋ ಪಲ ಮೇಂ॥
Tumhari mahima jala mem thala mem Duhkha daridra saba meto pala mem
ಅರ್ಥ:Your glory pervades the waters and the land; in an instant you wipe away all sorrow and poverty.
ಜೇತೇ ಋಷಿ ಔರ ಮುನೀಶಾ। ನಾರದ ದೇವ ಔರ ದೇವೇಶಾ।
Jete rishi aura munisha Narada deva aura devesha
ಅರ್ಥ:However many sages and great munis there are, and Narada and the lords of gods —
ಇಸ ಜಗತೀ ಕೇ ನರ ಔರ ನಾರೀ। ಧ್ಯಾನ ಧರತ ಹೈಂ ಮಾತ ತುಮ್ಹಾರೀ॥
Isa jagati ke nara aura nari Dhyana dharata haim mata tumhari
ಅರ್ಥ:— all the men and women of this world meditate upon you, O Mother.
ಜಾಪರ ಕೃಪಾ ತುಮ್ಹಾರೀ ಹೋತೀ। ವಹ ಪಾತಾ ಭಕ್ತಿ ಕಾ ಮೋತೀ॥
Japara kripa tumhari hoti Vaha pata bhakti ka moti
ಅರ್ಥ:Upon whomever your grace descends, that one obtains the pearl of devotion.
ದುಃಖ ದಾರಿದ್ರ ಸಂಕಟ ಮಿಟ ಜಾತಾ। ಧ್ಯಾನ ತುಮ್ಹಾರಾ ಜೋ ಜನ ಧ್ಯಾತಾ॥
Duhkha daridra samkata mita jata Dhyana tumhara jo jana dhyata
ಅರ್ಥ:Sorrow, poverty and calamity vanish for the one who meditates upon you.
ಜೋ ಜನ ತುಮ್ಹರೀ ಮಹಿಮಾ ಗಾವೈ। ಧ್ಯಾನ ತುಮ್ಹಾರಾ ಕರ ಸುಖ ಪಾವೈ॥
Jo jana tumhari mahima gavai Dhyana tumhara kara sukha pavai
ಅರ್ಥ:Whoever sings your glory and meditates on you finds happiness.
ಜೋ ಮನ ರಾಖೇ ಶುದ್ಧ ಭಾವನಾ। ತಾಕೀ ಪೂರಣ ಕರೋ ಕಾಮನಾ॥
Jo mana rakhe shuddha bhavana Taki purana karo kamana
ಅರ್ಥ:Whoever keeps a pure heart — their every wish you fulfil.
ಕುಮತಿ ನಿವಾರಿ ಸುಮತಿ ಕೀ ದಾತ್ರೀ। ಜಯತಿ ಜಯತಿ ಮಾತಾ ಜಗಧಾತ್ರೀ॥
Kumati nivari sumati ki datri Jayati jayati mata jagadhatri
ಅರ್ಥ:Remover of dull wit, bestower of good understanding — victory, victory, O Mother, sustainer of the world!
ಶುಕ್ರವಾರ ಕಾ ದಿವಸ ಸುಹಾವನ। ಜೋ ವ್ರತ ಕರೇ ತುಮ್ಹಾರಾ ಪಾವನ॥
Shukravara ka divasa suhavana Jo vrata kare tumhara pavana
ಅರ್ಥ:Pleasant is the day of Friday; whoever keeps your holy fast,
ಗುಡ़ ಛೋಲೇ ಕಾ ಭೋಗ ಲಗಾವೈ। ಕಥಾ ತುಮ್ಹಾರೀ ಸುನೇ ಸುನಾವೇ॥
Guda़ chhole ka bhoga lagavai Katha tumhari sune sunave
ಅರ್ಥ:— offers jaggery and roasted chickpeas (gud-chana), and hears and tells your story,
ವಿಧಿವತ ಪೂಜಾ ಕರೇ ತುಮ್ಹಾರೀ। ಫಿರ ಪ್ರಸಾದ ಪಾವೇ ಶುಭಕಾರೀ॥
Vidhivata puja kare tumhari Phira prasada pave shubhakari
ಅರ್ಥ:— and worships you with due rites, then receives your blessed prasad.
ಶಕ್ತಿ- ಸಾಮರಥ ಹೋ ಜೋ ಧನಕೋ। ದಾನ- ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾ ದೇ ವಿಪ್ರನ ಕೋ॥
Shakti- samaratha ho jo dhanako Dana- dakshina de viprana ko
ಅರ್ಥ:Those of means who give charity and dakshina to the brahmins,
ವೇ ಜಗತೀ ಕೇ ನರ ಔ ನಾರೀ। ಮನವಾಂಛಿತ ಫಲ ಪಾವೇಂ ಭಾರೀ॥
Ve jagati ke nara au nari Manavamchhita phala pavem bhari
ಅರ್ಥ:— those men and women of the world obtain abundantly their heart's desire.
ಜೋ ಜನ ಶರಣ ತುಮ್ಹಾರೀ ಜಾವೇ। ಸೋ ನಿಶ್ಚಯ ಭವ ಸೇ ತರ ಜಾವೇ॥
Jo jana sharana tumhari jave So nishchaya bhava se tara jave
ಅರ್ಥ:Whoever takes refuge in you surely crosses over the ocean of existence.
ತುಮ್ಹರೋ ಧ್ಯಾನ ಕುಮಾರೀ ಧ್ಯಾವೇ। ನಿಶ್ಚಯ ಮನವಾಂಛಿತ ವರ ಪಾವೈ॥
Tumharo dhyana kumari dhyave Nishchaya manavamchhita vara pavai
ಅರ್ಥ:The maiden who meditates on you certainly attains the husband she desires.
ಸಧವಾ ಪೂಜಾ ಕರೇ ತುಮ್ಹಾರೀ। ಅಮರ ಸುಹಾಗಿನ ಹೋ ವಹ ನಾರೀ॥
Sadhava puja kare tumhari Amara suhagina ho vaha nari
ಅರ್ಥ:The married woman who worships you becomes an ever-blessed, undying suhagin (happily wed).
ವಿಧವಾ ಧರ ಕೇ ಧ್ಯಾನ ತುಮ್ಹಾರಾ। ಭವಸಾಗರ ಸೇ ಉತರೇ ಪಾರಾ॥
Vidhava dhara ke dhyana tumhara Bhavasagara se utare para
ಅರ್ಥ:The widow who holds your meditation crosses over the ocean of existence.
ಜಯತಿ ಜಯತಿ ಜಯ ಸಂಕಟ ಹರಣೀ। ವಿಘ್ನ ವಿನಾಶನ ಮಂಗಲ ಕರನೀ॥
Jayati jayati jaya samkata harani Vighna vinashana mamgala karani
ಅರ್ಥ:Victory, victory, victory, O remover of calamity, destroyer of obstacles, doer of good!
ಹಮ ಪರ ಸಂಕಟ ಹೈ ಅತಿ ಭಾರೀ। ವೇಗಿ ಖಬರ ಲೋ ಮಾತ ಹಮಾರೀ॥
Hama para samkata hai ati bhari Vegi khabara lo mata hamari
ಅರ್ಥ:A great calamity is upon us — come swiftly, O Mother, and look upon us.
ಸಂತೋಷೀ ಮಾಂ ಕೇ ಸದಾ ಬಂದಹೂಂ ಪಗ ನಿಶ ವಾಸ। ಪೂರ್ಣ ಮನೋರಥ ಹೋ ಸಕಲ ಮಾತ ಹರೌ ಭವ ತ್ರಾಸ॥

ಅರ್ಥ:I ever bow at Santoshi Mother's feet, dwelling in her day and night; may all desires be fulfilled — O Mother, remove the fear of existence.

Recitation of the Santoshi Mata Chalisa brings contentment (santosh), peace and the fulfilment of sincere wishes.
It is the heart of the popular Santoshi Mata Friday (Shukravar) vrat, removing sorrow, poverty and calamity.
Said to grant a good husband to maidens, lasting saubhagya to married women, and refuge to all who take shelter in the Mother.
Recounts the Goddess's many forms across India's holy shrines, deepening devotion to the Divine Mother.
Calms anxiety and discontent, replacing them with gratitude and steadiness of mind.
Especially recited on Fridays, with an offering of jaggery and roasted chickpeas (gud-chana).
सन्तोषी माता चालीसा ಪಾರಾಯಣ ವಿಧಿ
On Friday, after bathing, sit before an image of Santoshi Mata and offer gud (jaggery) and chana (roasted chickpeas). Light a lamp, recite the opening doha and the chaupais with devotion, and listen to or tell the vrat katha. Avoid sour foods on the fast day. Conclude with aarti and distribute the prasad. The vrat is traditionally observed for 16 Fridays.
