The Vishnu Chalisa belongs to the beloved 'chalisa' tradition of forty-verse Hindi hymns — the same tradition as the Hanuman Chalisa. It garlands Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the cosmos, recalling how in age after age he descends in many forms to lighten the Earth's burden, destroy evil and rescue his devotees, from Dhruva and Prahlada to Ajamila and the courtesan Ganika.

The Chalisa itself recounts Vishnu's endless rescues — drawing the Earth from the depths as the Boar, saving the boy Prahlada from his demon father, redeeming even the sinner Ajamila who merely called out the name 'Narayana' at death. Its closing promise is simple and sweet: whoever reads or hears this prayer with devotion gains happiness.

பொருள்:Hear my prayer, O Vishnu, and turn your mind to your servant; I shall sing a little of your glory — grant me, I pray, the wisdom to do so.
நமோ விஷ்ணு பகவாந கராரீ। கஷ்ட நஶாவந அகில பிஹாரீ॥
Namo vishnu bhagavana kharari Kashta nashavana akhila bihari
பொருள்:Salutations to Lord Vishnu, the slayer of Khara (the foe of demons), remover of suffering, who pervades and sports through all the worlds.
ப்ரபல ஜகத மேம் ஶக்தி தும்ஹாரீ। த்ரிபுவந பைல ரஹீ உஜியாரீ॥
Prabala jagata mem shakti tumhari Tribhuvana phaila rahi ujiyari
பொருள்:Mighty is your power throughout the world; your radiance has spread across the three realms.
ஸுந்தர ரூப மநோஹர ஸூரத। ஸரல ஸ்வபாவ மோஹநீ மூரத॥
Sundara rupa manohara surata Sarala svabhava mohani murata
பொருள்:Beautiful is your form and enchanting your face; gentle your nature and captivating your image.
தந பர பீதாம்பர அதி ஸோஹத। பைஜந்தீ மாலா மந மோஹத॥
Tana para pitambara ati sohata Baijanti mala mana mohata
பொருள்:Yellow silk (pitambara) shines splendidly upon your body, and the Vaijayanti garland steals the heart.
ஶம்க சக்ர கர கதா பிராஜே। தேகத தைத்ய அஸுர தல பாஜே॥
Shamkha chakra kara gada biraje Dekhata daitya asura dala bhaje
பொருள்:Conch, discus and mace gleam in your hands; at the very sight the hosts of demons flee.
ஸத்ய தர்ம மத லோப ந காஜே। காம க்ரோத மத லோப ந சாஜே॥
Satya dharma mada lobha na gaje Kama krodha mada lobha na chhaje
பொருள்:Where there is truth and dharma, pride and greed cannot roar; lust, anger, arrogance and greed find no place.
ஸந்தபக்த ஸஜ்ஜந மநரம்ஜந। தநுஜ அஸுர துஷ்டந தல கம்ஜந॥
Santabhakta sajjana manaramjana Danuja asura dushtana dala gamjana
பொருள்:You delight the hearts of saints, devotees and the good, and crush the ranks of demons, asuras and the wicked.
ஸுக உபஜாய கஷ்ட ஸப பம்ஜந। தோஷ மிடாய கரத ஜந ஸஜ்ஜந॥
Sukha upajaya kashta saba bhamjana Dosha mitaya karata jana sajjana
பொருள்:You give rise to joy and shatter every sorrow; you wipe away faults and make people virtuous.
பாப காட பவ ஸிந்து உதாரண। கஷ்ட நாஶகர பக்த உபாரண॥
Papa kata bhava sindhu utarana Kashta nashakara bhakta ubarana
பொருள்:You cut away sin and ferry souls across the ocean of existence; destroying distress, you save your devotees.
கரத அநேக ரூப ப்ரபு தாரண। கேவல ஆப பக்தி கே காரண॥
Karata aneka rupa prabhu dharana Kevala apa bhakti ke karana
பொருள்:The Lord assumes many and various forms — solely for the sake of his devotees' love.
தரணி தேநு பந துமஹிம் புகாரா। தப தும ரூப ராம கா தாரா॥
Dharani dhenu bana tumahim pukara Taba tuma rupa rama ka dhara
பொருள்:When the Earth, as a cow, cried out to you, you took the form of Rama;
பார உதார அஸுர தல மாரா। ராவண ஆதிக கோ ஸம்ஹாரா॥
Bhara utara asura dala mara Ravana adika ko samhara
பொருள்:— and lightening her burden, you destroyed the demon hordes and slew Ravana and the rest.
ஆப வாராஹ ரூப பநாயா। ஹிரண்யாக்ஷ கோ மார கிராயா॥
Apa varaha rupa banaya Hiranyaksha ko mara giraya
பொருள்:You took the form of the Boar (Varaha) and struck down the demon Hiranyaksha.
தர மத்ஸ்ய தந ஸிந்து பநாயா। சௌதஹ ரதநந கோ நிகலாயா॥
Dhara matsya tana sindhu banaya Chaudaha ratanana ko nikalaya
பொருள்:Assuming the Fish (Matsya) form you moved through the ocean, and drew out the fourteen jewels.
அமிலக அஸுரந த்வந்த மசாயா। ரூப மோஹநீ ஆப திகாயா॥
Amilakha asurana dvanda machaya Rupa mohani apa dikhaya
பொருள்:When the demons stirred up endless strife, you displayed the enchanting Mohini form;
தேவந கோ அம்ரு'த பாந கராயா। அஸுரந கோ சபி ஸே பஹலாயா॥
Devana ko amrita pana karaya Asurana ko chhabi se bahalaya
பொருள்:— you made the gods drink the nectar (amrita), while diverting the demons with your beauty.
கூர்ம ரூப தர ஸிந்து மசாயா। மந்த்ராசல கிரி துரத உடாயா॥
Kurma rupa dhara sindhu majhaya Mandrachala giri turata uthaya
பொருள்:Taking the Tortoise (Kurma) form you steadied the ocean, instantly bearing up Mount Mandara.
ஶம்கர கா தும பந்த சுட़ாயா। பஸ்மாஸுர கோ ரூப திகாயா॥
Shamkara ka tuma phanda chhuda़aya Bhasmasura ko rupa dikhaya
பொருள்:You freed Shankara from the snare and exposed the demon Bhasmasura;
வேதந கோ ஜப அஸுர டுபாயா। கர ப்ரபந்த உந்ஹேம் டும்டவாயா॥
Vedana ko jaba asura dubaya Kara prabandha unhem dhundhavaya
பொருள்:— when the asura had hidden the Vedas in the deep, you contrived to have them found.
மோஹித பநகர கலஹி நசாயா। உஸஹீ கர ஸே பஸ்ம கராயா॥
Mohita banakara khalahi nachaya Usahi kara se bhasma karaya
பொருள்:Becoming enchanting (Mohini), you set the wicked one dancing, and by his own hand reduced him to ashes.
அஸுர ஜலம்தர அதி பலதாஈ। ஶம்கர ஸே உந கீந்ஹ லட़ாஈ॥
Asura jalamdhara ati baladai Shamkara se una kinha lada़ai
பொருள்:The demon Jalandhara, mighty in strength, waged war against Shankara;
ஹார பார ஶிவ ஸகல பநாஈ। கீந ஸதீ ஸே சல கல ஜாஈ॥
Hara para shiva sakala banai Kina sati se chhala khala jai
பொருள்:— Shiva was hard-pressed on every side, for the villain had deceived Sati through trickery.
ஸுமிரந கீந தும்ஹேம் ஶிவராநீ। பதலாஈ ஸப விபத கஹாநீ॥
Sumirana kina tumhem shivarani Batalai saba vipata kahani
பொருள்:Shiva's queen (Parvati) remembered you and told you the whole tale of the calamity.
தப தும பநே முநீஶ்வர ஜ்ஞாநீ। வ்ரு'ந்தா கீ ஸப ஸுரதி புலாநீ॥
Taba tuma bane munishvara jnani Vrinda ki saba surati bhulani
பொருள்:Then you became a wise sage and caused Vrinda (Jalandhara's wife) to forget her vigilance;
தேகத தீந தநுஜ ஶைதாநீ। வ்ரு'ந்தா ஆய தும்ஹேம் லபடாநீ॥
Dekhata tina danuja shaitani Vrinda aya tumhem lapatani
பொருள்:— seeing the demon's three-fold deceit, Vrinda came and clung to you.
ஹோ ஸ்பர்ஶ தர்ம க்ஷதி மாநீ। ஹநா அஸுர உர ஶிவ ஶைதாநீ॥
Ho sparsha dharma kshati mani Hana asura ura shiva shaitani
பொருள்:When she felt her chastity was touched, the demon's power was broken and the villain slain by Shiva.
துமநே துரூ ப்ரஹலாத உபாரே। ஹிரணாகுஶ ஆதிக கல மாரே॥
Tumane dhuru prahalada ubare Hiranakusha adika khala mare
பொருள்:You delivered Dhruva and Prahlada, and slew the wicked Hiranyakashipu and his kind.
கணிகா ஔர அஜாமில தாரே। பஹுத பக்த பவ ஸிந்து உதாரே॥
Ganika aura ajamila tare Bahuta bhakta bhava sindhu utare
பொருள்:You redeemed Ganika (the courtesan) and Ajamila, and ferried countless devotees across the sea of existence.
ஹரஹு ஸகல ஸம்தாப ஹமாரே। க்ரு'பா கரஹு ஹரி ஸிரஜந ஹாரே॥
Harahu sakala samtapa hamare Kripa karahu hari sirajana hare
பொருள்:Remove all our afflictions; show your grace, O Hari, O creator of all.
தேகஹும் மைம் நிஜ தரஶ தும்ஹாரே। தீந பந்து பக்தந ஹிதகாரே॥
Dekhahun maim nija darasha tumhare Dina bandhu bhaktana hitakare
பொருள்:Let me behold your own vision, O kinsman of the lowly, O benefactor of devotees.
சஹத ஆபகா ஸேவக தர்ஶந। கரஹு தயா அபநீ மதுஸூதந॥
Chahata apaka sevaka darshana Karahu daya apani madhusudana
பொருள்:Your servant longs for your darshan; show your mercy, O Madhusudana.
ஜாநூம் நஹீம் யோக்ய ஜப பூஜந। ஹோய யஜ்ஞ ஸ்துதி அநுமோதந॥
Janum nahim yogya japa pujana Hoya yajna stuti anumodana
பொருள்:I know not the worthy way of chanting and worship; may my praise be accepted as if it were a sacrifice.
ஶீலதயா ஸந்தோஷ ஸுலக்ஷண। விதித நஹீம் வ்ரதபோத விலக்ஷண॥
Shiladaya santosha sulakshana Vidita nahim vratabodha vilakshana
பொருள்:Good conduct, compassion, contentment and noble traits — the secret of vows and knowledge — I do not truly know.
கரஹும் ஆபகா கிஸ விதி பூஜந। குமதி விலோக ஹோத துக பீஷண॥
Karahun apaka kisa vidhi pujana Kumati viloka hota dukha bhishana
பொருள்:By what method shall I worship you? Beholding my dull wit, dreadful sorrow arises.
கரஹும் ப்ரணாம கௌந விதிஸுமிரண। கௌந பாம்தி மைம் கரஹும் ஸமர்பண॥
Karahun pranama kauna vidhisumirana Kauna bhamti maim karahun samarpana
பொருள்:How shall I bow, by what means remember you, in what manner offer myself?
ஸுர முநி கரத ஸதா ஸிவகாஈ। ஹர்ஷித ரஹத பரம கதி பாஈ॥
Sura muni karata sada sivakai Harshita rahata parama gati pai
பொருள்:Gods and sages ever serve Shiva (and you), and remain joyful, having attained the supreme state.
தீந துகிந பர ஸதா ஸஹாஈ। நிஜ ஜந ஜாந லேவ அபநாஈ॥
Dina dukhina para sada sahai Nija jana jana leva apanai
பொருள்:You are ever the helper of the poor and suffering; know us as your own and make us yours.
பாப தோஷ ஸம்தாப நஶாஓ। பவ பந்தந ஸே முக்த கராஓ॥
Papa dosha samtapa nashao Bhava bandhana se mukta karao
பொருள்:Destroy our sin, faults and affliction, and free us from the bondage of existence.
ஸுத ஸம்பதி தே ஸுக உபஜாஓ। நிஜ சரநந கா தாஸ பநாஓ॥
Suta sampati de sukha upajao Nija charanana ka dasa banao
பொருள்:Grant children and prosperity and give rise to happiness; make us the servants of your own feet.
நிகம ஸதா யே விநய ஸுநாவை। பட़ை ஸுநை ஸோ ஜந ஸுக பாவை॥
Nigama sada ye vinaya sunavai Padha़ai sunai so jana sukha pavai
பொருள்:Thus does Nigam (the devotee/scripture) ever offer this prayer: whoever reads or hears it gains happiness.

Daily recitation of the Vishnu Chalisa invokes the grace of Lord Vishnu, the preserver, removing obstacles, sorrow and danger.
It recounts Vishnu's ten incarnations (Dashavatar) — Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Rama, Krishna and more — strengthening faith and devotion.
Said to bring wealth, strength, fame and peace, and to help relieve planetary doshas (Shani, Rahu, Ketu).
Especially powerful on Thursdays (Guruvar) and Ekadashi, the days dedicated to Vishnu.
Calms the mind, dissolves fear, and frees the devotee from the bondage of worldly existence.
A simple, accessible 40-verse hymn that the whole family can recite together.
विष्णु चालीसा பாராயண முறை
After bathing, sit before an image of Vishnu/Narayana wearing clean (ideally yellow) clothes. Light a lamp, offer tulsi leaves and sandal, and recite the opening doha followed by the forty chaupais with devotion. Conclude with 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya' and aarti. Thursday is the most auspicious day.
