Origin & Story

Sri Venkatesa Suprabhatam corpus (recited daily at Tirumala); part of the traditional Suprabhatam–Stotram–Prapatti–Mangalasasanam sequence · Traditional; the concluding verse honours Sri Manavala Mamunigal and the earlier acharyas (the Suprabhatam corpus is attributed to Prativadi Bhayankaram Annangaracharya/Anantacharya) · Medieval (Sri Vaishnava tradition)

The Mangalasasanam forms the closing portion of the daily liturgy at the Tirumala temple of Lord Venkateswara. After the Lord is awakened with the Suprabhatam, praised with the Stotram, and surrendered to with the Prapatti, the worship concludes with this Mangalasasanam in which the devotee, brimming with love, wishes long auspiciousness upon the Lord and upon the lineage of acharyas who have ever sung His glory. The Sri Vaishnava idea of mangalasasanam — blessing the Lord out of pure affection rather than asking anything for oneself — is its heart.

As told in scripture

Devotees of Tirumala hold that to wish the Lord 'Mangalam' with selfless love at the close of His worship is itself the highest reward, for the Lord who detached Himself even from Vaikuntha to dwell among His devotees responds to such love by granting unasked every blessing, prosperity and protection.

Yes — only the script changes; the words and their meaning are the original. The verse-by-verse meaning, benefits and how-to-chant guidance on this page apply exactly the same.
Mangalasasanam means 'the invocation or proclamation of auspiciousness (mangalam)'. In the Sri Vaishnava tradition the devotee, out of overflowing love, wishes well-being and long auspiciousness upon the Lord Himself, just as one would bless a beloved. Each verse therefore ends with the word 'Mangalam'.
It is traditionally chanted at the very end of worship — after the puja, abhishekam or aarti — as a closing benediction. It is especially sung at Tirumala and in Venkateswara temples, on Saturdays, on Ekadashi, and during the Brahmotsavam festival.
The thirteenth verse honours Sundarajamatru Muni (Manavala Mamunigal), the great Sri Vaishnava acharya, in whose heart the Lord dwells. The fourteenth verse offers auspiciousness to the Lord as worshipped by 'our acharyas' and all the earlier preceptors who were devoted to His mangalasasanam.
No. The Suprabhatam is the 'auspicious dawn' hymn used to wake the Lord in the morning, of which Mangalasasanam forms a concluding section in the full Suprabhatam collection. The Mangalasasanam can also be sung independently as a benediction at the close of any worship.
