दुर्गा सप्तशती के सप्तम अध्याय के ये प्रसिद्ध श्लोक देवी काली के प्रादुर्भाव का वर्णन करते हैं। जब चण्ड और मुण्ड दैत्यों ने आक्रमण किया, तब अम्बिका का मुख क्रोध से काला पड़ गया, और उनकी टेढ़ी भृकुटि से काली प्रकट हुईं — विकराल, हाथ में खड्ग और पाश, खट्वांग धारिणी, मुण्डमाला से विभूषित, बाघ-चर्म पहने, लपलपाती जीभ और दिशाओं को भरती गर्जना वाली। यही काली के प्रसिद्ध, भयंकर स्वरूप का शास्त्रीय स्रोत है।

The demon-king Shumbha sent his generals Chanda and Munda with a fourfold army to seize the Goddess. As they advanced to capture her, Ambika's face grew dark with fury, and from the knit brow of her forehead the fierce Goddess Kali burst forth, sword and noose in hand. Kali devoured the demon hosts and beheaded Chanda and Munda, for which the Goddess named her Chamunda.

It is traditionally believed that the very recitation of Kali's emergence here can drive away malign forces and break spells, for the form that scattered Chanda and Munda's armies is said to manifest its protective power around the sincere devotee who calls upon her.

अर्थ:उनके भौंहों से टेढ़े हुए ललाट-पटल से सहसा काली प्रकट हुईं, जो विकराल मुख वाली, खड्ग और पाश धारण किए हुए, विचित्र खट्वांग लिए, नर-मुण्डों की माला से विभूषित, बाघ-चर्म पहने, सूखे मांस से अत्यन्त भयंकर थीं; जिनका मुख अत्यन्त फैला हुआ, लपलपाती जीभ से भयानक, गहरे लाल नेत्र वाला, और जिनकी गर्जना से दिशाएँ भर गई थीं।
