Durge Durghata Bhari belongs to the rich tradition of Marathi aartis sung in the evening worship of the Mother Goddess. Its devotee confesses that worldly life is an impassable difficulty without Her grace and recalls how even the four Vedas and six systems of philosophy fail to fathom Her, yet She rushes to the aid of those who love Her. The closing 'Narahari' signature is the poet's seal, surrendering himself to a mere speck of dust from Her lotus feet. The aarti is especially associated with Bhavani of Tuljapur, the revered kuladevata of countless Maharashtrian families.

Goddess Bhavani of Tuljapur is venerated as the deity who, by tradition, granted her own sword to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for the protection of dharma. Devotees hold that those who sing Her aarti with surrender, as in 'Durge Durghata Bhari', find the Mother removing dangers that seemed impossible to overcome.

ದುರ್ಗೇ ದುರ್ಘಟ ಭಾರೀ ತುಜವೀಣ ಸಂಸಾರೀಂ । ಅನಾಥನಾಥೇ ಅಂಬೇ ಕರುಣಾ ವಿಸ್ತಾರೀಂ ॥ ವಾರೀಂ ವಾರೀಂ ಜನ್ಮಮರಣಾತೇಂ ವಾರೀಂ । ಹಾರೀಂ ಪಡಲೋ ಆತಾಂ ಸಂಕಟ ನಿವಾರೀಂ ॥

ಅರ್ಥ:हे दुर्गे, तुम्हारे बिना यह संसार दुर्घट कष्टों से भरा है; हे अनाथों की नाथ अंबे, अपनी करुणा विस्तृत करो। बार-बार मेरे जन्म-मरण को टालो — मैं पूर्णतः हार चुका हूँ, अब इस संकट का निवारण करो।

ಅರ್ಥ:जय हो, जय हो, हे देवी, महिषासुर का मथन करने वाली! देवों और ईश्वरों को भी वरदान देने वाली, तारक और संजीवनी।
ತ್ರಿಭುವನಭುವನೀಂ ಪಾಹತಾಂ ತುಜಐಸೀ ನಾಹೀಂ । ಚಾರೀ ಶ್ರಮಲೇ ಪರಂತು ನ ಬೋಲವೇ ಕಾಂಹೀಂ ॥ ಸಾಹೀ ವಿವಾದ ಕರಿತಾಂ ಪಡಿಲೇ ಪ್ರವಾಹೀಂ । ತೇ ತೂಂ ಭಕ್ತಾಂಲಾಗೀಂ ಪಾವಸಿ ಲವಲಾಹೀಂ ॥

ಅರ್ಥ:तीनों लोकों के समस्त भुवनों में तुम्हारे समान कोई नहीं। चारों वेद थक गए पर कुछ कह न सके; छहों (दर्शन) विवाद करते हुए प्रवाह में बह गए — फिर भी तुम भक्तों के लिए शीघ्र प्रकट होती हो।
ಪ್ರಸನ್ನವದನೇ ಪ್ರಸನ್ನ ಹೋಸೀ ನಿಜದಾಸಾಂ । ಕ್ಲೇಶಾಂಪಾಸುನಿ ಸೋಡವೀಂ ತೋಡೀಂ ಭವಪಾಶಾಂ ॥ ಅಂಬೇ ತುಜವಾಂಚೂನ ಕೋಣ ಪುರವೀಲ ಆಶಾ । ನರಹರಿ ತಲ್ಲಿನ ಝಾಲಾ ಪದಪಂಕಜಲೇಶಾ ॥

ಅರ್ಥ:प्रसन्न मुख से तुम अपने दासों पर प्रसन्न होती हो; क्लेशों से छुड़ाओ, भवपाश काटो। हे अंबे, तुम्हारे बिना कौन आशा पूरी करेगा? नरहरि तुम्हारे चरण-कमल की एक रज में ही तल्लीन हो गया है।

Sing it with a surrendered heart, taking refuge in the Mother as the remover of every insurmountable trouble.
