The Ram Chalisa is a forty-verse Hindi hymn in the beloved chalisa tradition, praising Rama as Maryada Purushottam — the perfect embodiment of dharma. It dwells above all on the boundless power of Rama's name, which the Vedas proclaim, which Shiva eternally repeats, and which carries the devotee across every difficulty to the abode of Vaikuntha.

ਅਰਥ:O Sri Raghuvira (Rama), benefactor of your devotees, hear, O Lord, this humble plea of ours.
ਨਿਸ਼ਿ ਦਿਨ ਧ੍ਯਾਨ ਧਰੈ ਜੋ ਕੋਈ। ਤਾ ਸਮ ਭਕ੍ਤ ਔਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਈ॥
Nishi dina dhyana dharai jo koi Ta sama bhakta aura nahim hoi
ਅਰਥ:Whoever meditates upon you night and day — there is no devotee equal to them.
ਧ੍ਯਾਨ ਧਰੇਂ ਸ਼ਿਵਜੀ ਮਨ ਮਾਂਹੀ। ਬ੍ਰਹ੍ਮਾ, ਇਨ੍ਦ੍ਰ ਪਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਹੀਂ॥
Dhyana dharem shivaji mana mamhi Brahma, indra para nahim pahim
ਅਰਥ:Shiva himself holds your meditation in his heart; even Brahma and Indra cannot reach your limit.
ਦੂਤ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਾਰ ਵੀਰ ਹਨੁਮਾਨਾ। ਜਾਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤਿਹੁਂ ਪੁਰ ਜਾਨਾ॥
Duta tumhara vira hanumana Jasu prabhava tihum pura jana
ਅਰਥ:Your messenger is the hero Hanuman, whose might is known throughout the three worlds.
ਜਯ, ਜਯ, ਜਯ ਰਘੁਨਾਥ ਕृਪਾਲਾ। ਸਦਾ ਕਰੋ ਸਂਤਨ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਾ॥
Jaya, jaya, jaya raghunatha kripala Sada karo samtana pratipala
ਅਰਥ:Victory, victory, victory, O compassionate Raghunatha; ever protect the saints.
ਤੁਵ ਭੁਜਦਣ੍ਡ ਪ੍ਰਚਣ੍ਡ ਕृਪਾਲਾ। ਰਾਵਣ ਮਾਰਿ ਸੁਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਾ॥
Tuva bhujadanda prachanda kripala Ravana mari surana pratipala
ਅਰਥ:Your mighty arms are fierce, O merciful one; slaying Ravana, you protected the gods.
ਤੁਮ ਅਨਾਥ ਕੇ ਨਾਥ ਗੋਸਾਈਂ। ਦੀਨਨ ਕੇ ਹੋ ਸਦਾ ਸਹਾਈ॥
Tuma anatha ke natha gosaim Dinana ke ho sada sahai
ਅਰਥ:You are the Lord of the orphaned, O Master; ever the helper of the lowly.
ਬ੍ਰਹ੍ਮਾਦਿਕ ਤਵ ਪਾਰ ਨ ਪਾਵੈਂ। ਸਦਾ ਈਸ਼ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਰੋ ਯਸ਼ ਗਾਵੈਂ॥
Brahmadika tava para na pavaim Sada isha tumharo yasha gavaim
ਅਰਥ:Brahma and the gods cannot find your limit; ever, O Lord, they sing your glory.
ਚਾਰਿਉ ਭੇਦ ਭਰਤ ਹੈਂ ਸਾਖੀ। ਤੁਮ ਭਕ੍ਤਨ ਕੀ ਲਜ੍ਜਾ ਰਾਖੀ॥
Chariu bheda bharata haim sakhi Tuma bhaktana ki lajja rakhi
ਅਰਥ:The four Vedas bear witness; you preserve the honour of your devotees.
ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਤ ਸ਼ਾਰਦ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀਂ। ਸੁਰਪਤਿ ਤਾਕੋ ਪਾਰ ਨ ਪਾਹਿਂ॥
Guna gavata sharada mana mahim Surapati tako para na pahim
ਅਰਥ:Sharada (Saraswati) sings your virtues in her heart, yet even Indra cannot reach your end.
ਨਾਮ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਾਰ ਲੇਤ ਜੋ ਕੋਈ। ਤਾ ਸਮ ਧਨ੍ਯ ਔਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਈ॥
Nama tumhara leta jo koi Ta sama dhanya aura nahim hoi
ਅਰਥ:Whoever takes your name — none is more blessed than they.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਹੈ ਅਪਰਮ੍ਪਾਰਾ। ਚਾਰਿਹੁ ਵੇਦਨ ਜਾਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ॥

ਅਰਥ:The name of Rama is boundless; all four Vedas proclaim it.
ਗਣਪਤਿ ਨਾਮ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਾਰੋ ਲੀਨ੍ਹੋ। ਤਿਨਕੋ ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਪੂਜ੍ਯ ਤੁਮ ਕੀਨ੍ਹੋ॥
Ganapati nama tumharo linho Tinako prathama pujya tuma kinho
ਅਰਥ:You took on the name of Ganapati (Ganesha) and made him the first to be worshipped.
ਸ਼ੇष ਰਟਤ ਨਿਤ ਨਾਮ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਾਰਾ। ਮਹਿ ਕੋ ਭਾਰ ਸ਼ੀਸ਼ ਪਰ ਧਾਰਾ॥
Shesha ratata nita nama tumhara Mahi ko bhara shisha para dhara
ਅਰਥ:Shesha (the serpent) ever repeats your name, bearing the burden of the earth upon his head.
ਫੂਲ ਸਮਾਨ ਰਹਤ ਸੋ ਭਾਰਾ। ਪਾਵਤ ਕੋਊ ਨ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਰੋ ਪਾਰਾ॥
Phula samana rahata so bhara Pavata kou na tumharo para
ਅਰਥ:That burden rests as light as a flower for him; yet no one finds your limit.
ਭਰਤ ਨਾਮ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਰੋ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੋ। ਤਾਸੋਂ ਕਬਹੂਂ ਨ ਰਣ ਮੇਂ ਹਾਰੋ॥
Bharata nama tumharo ura dharo Tasom kabahum na rana mem haro
ਅਰਥ:Hold the name of Bharata in your heart, and you will never be defeated in battle.
ਨਾਮ ਸ਼ਤ੍ਰੁਹਨ ਹृਦਯ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਾ। ਸੁਮਿਰਤ ਹੋਤ ਸ਼ਤ੍ਰੁ ਕਰ ਨਾਸ਼ਾ॥
Nama shatruhana hridaya prakasha Sumirata hota shatru kara nasha
ਅਰਥ:The name of Shatrughna shines in the heart; remembering it, the enemy is destroyed.
ਲਖਨ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਾਰੇ ਆਜ੍ਞਾਕਾਰੀ। ਸਦਾ ਕਰਤ ਸਨ੍ਤਨ ਰਖਵਾਰੀ॥
Lakhana tumhare ajnakari Sada karata santana rakhavari
ਅਰਥ:Lakshmana is obedient to you, ever guarding the saints.
ਤਾਤੇ ਰਣ ਜੀਤੇ ਨਹਿਂ ਕੋਈ। ਯੁਦ੍ਧ ਜੁਰੇ ਯਮਹੂਂ ਕਿਨ ਹੋਈ॥
Tate rana jite nahim koi Yuddha jure yamahum kina hoi
ਅਰਥ:Therefore none can win against them in battle, even were Yama himself to join the fight.
ਮਹਾਲਕ੍ष੍ਮੀ ਧਰ ਅਵਤਾਰਾ। ਸਬ ਵਿਧਿ ਕਰਤ ਪਾਪ ਕੋ ਛਾਰਾ॥
Mahalakshmi dhara avatara Saba vidhi karata papa ko chhara
ਅਰਥ:Mahalakshmi took incarnation (as Sita) and in every way reduced sin to ashes.
ਸੀਤਾ ਰਾਮ ਪੁਨੀਤਾ ਗਾਯੋ। ਭੁਵਨੇਸ਼੍ਵਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਦਿਖਾਯੋ॥
Sita rama punita gayo Bhuvaneshvari prabhava dikhayo
ਅਰਥ:Sita and Rama were sung as purifiers; she showed the power of Bhuvaneshwari.
ਘਟ ਸੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਕਟ ਭਈ ਸੋ ਆਈ। ਜਾਕੋ ਦੇਖਤ ਚਨ੍ਦ੍ਰ ਲਜਾਈ॥
Ghata som prakata bhai so ai Jako dekhata chandra lajai
ਅਰਥ:She appeared from the earth (a pot), at whose sight even the moon felt shy.
ਜੋ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਪਾਂਵ ਪਲੋਟਤ। ਨਵੋ ਨਿਦ੍ਧਿ ਚਰਣਨ ਮੇਂ ਲੋਟਤ॥
Jo tumhare nita pamva palotata Navo niddhi charanana mem lotata
ਅਰਥ:Those who ever press your feet — the nine treasures roll at their feet.
ਸਿਦ੍ਧਿ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਮਂਗਲਕਾਰੀ। ਸੋ ਤੁਮ ਪਰ ਜਾਵੈ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ॥
Siddhi atharaha mamgalakari So tuma para javai balihari
ਅਰਥ:The eighteen auspicious siddhis are ever sacrificed in devotion to you.
ਔਰਹੁ ਜੋ ਅਨੇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੁਤਾਈ। ਸੋ ਸੀਤਾਪਤਿ ਤੁਮਹਿਂ ਬਨਾਈ॥
Aurahu jo aneka prabhutai So sitapati tumahim banai
ਅਰਥ:And whatever other glories exist, O Lord of Sita, you have created them all.
ਇਚ੍ਛਾ ਤੇ ਕੋਟਿਨ ਸਂਸਾਰਾ। ਰਚਤ ਨ ਲਾਗਤ ਪਲ ਕੀ ਬਾਰਾ॥
Ichchha te kotina samsara Rachata na lagata pala ki bara
ਅਰਥ:By your mere wish, millions of universes are made in less than a moment.
ਜੋ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਰੇ ਚਰਣਨ ਚਿਤ ਲਾਵੈ। ਤਾਕੀ ਮੁਕ੍ਤਿ ਅਵਸਿ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੈ॥
Jo tumhare charanana chita lavai Taki mukti avasi ho javai
ਅਰਥ:Whoever fixes the mind upon your feet surely attains liberation.
ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰਾਮ ਤੁਮ ਤਾਤ ਹਮਾਰੇ। ਤੁਮਹਿਂ ਭਰਤ ਕੁਲ ਪੂਜ੍ਯ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰੇ॥
Sunahu rama tuma tata hamare Tumahim bharata kula pujya prachare
ਅਰਥ:Hear me, O Rama, you are our father; you are proclaimed worthy of worship in Bharata's line.
ਤੁਮਹਿਂ ਦੇਵ ਕੁਲ ਦੇਵ ਹਮਾਰੇ। ਤੁਮ ਗੁਰੁ ਦੇਵ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਯਾਰੇ॥
Tumahim deva kula deva hamare Tuma guru deva prana ke pyare
ਅਰਥ:You are the deity of our family of gods; you are our Guru, beloved as our very life.
ਜੋ ਕੁਛ ਹੋ ਸੋ ਤੁਮਹਿਂ ਰਾਜਾ। ਜਯ ਜਯ ਜਯ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰਾਖੋ ਲਾਜਾ॥
Jo kuchha ho so tumahim raja Jaya jaya jaya prabhu rakho laja
ਅਰਥ:Whatever there is, all is yours, O King; victory, victory, victory, O Lord — preserve our honour.
ਰਾਮ ਆਤ੍ਮਾ ਪੋषਣ ਹਾਰੇ। ਜਯ ਜਯ ਜਯ ਦਸ਼ਰਥ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਯਾਰੇ॥

ਅਰਥ:O Rama, nourisher of the soul; victory, victory, victory, O beloved of Dasharatha.
ਜਯ ਜਯ ਜਯ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜ੍ਯੋਤਿ ਸ੍ਵਰੁਪਾ। ਨਰ੍ਗੁਣ ਬ੍ਰਹृ ਅਖਣ੍ਡ ਅਨੂਪਾ॥

ਅਰਥ:Victory, victory, O Lord of the form of pure light; the attributeless Brahman, unbroken and matchless.
ਸਤ੍ਯ ਸਤ੍ਯ ਜਯ ਸਤ੍ਯਵ੍ਰਤ ਸ੍ਵਾਮੀ। ਸਤ੍ਯ ਸਨਾਤਨ ਅਨ੍ਤਰ੍ਯਾਮੀ॥
Satya satya jaya satyavrata svami Satya sanatana antaryami
ਅਰਥ:Truly, truly, victory, O Lord true to your vow; the eternal Truth, the inner controller of all.
ਸਤ੍ਯ ਭਜਨ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਰੋ ਜੋ ਗਾਵੈ। ਸੋ ਨਿਸ਼੍ਚਯ ਚਾਰੋਂ ਫਲ ਪਾਵੈ॥
Satya bhajana tumharo jo gavai So nishchaya charom phala pavai
ਅਰਥ:Whoever sings your true praise surely obtains all four fruits of life.
ਸਤ੍ਯ ਸ਼ਪਥ ਗੌਰੀਪਤਿ ਕੀਨ੍ਹੀਂ। ਤੁਮਨੇ ਭਕ੍ਤਿਹਿਂ ਸਬ ਸਿਧਿ ਦੀਨ੍ਹੀਂ॥
Satya shapatha gauripati kinhim Tumane bhaktihim saba sidhi dinhim
ਅਰਥ:Gauri's Lord (Shiva) took a true oath: you bestow every perfection through devotion.
ਜ੍ਞਾਨ ਹृਦਯ ਦੋ ਜ੍ਞਾਨ ਸ੍ਵਰੁਪਾ। ਨਮੋ ਨਮੋ ਜਯ ਜਗਪਤਿ ਭੂਪਾ॥
Jnana hridaya do jnana svarupa Namo namo jaya jagapati bhupa
ਅਰਥ:Grant knowledge to my heart, O embodiment of knowledge; salutations, salutations, victory, O Lord of the world.
ਧਨ੍ਯ ਧਨ੍ਯ ਤੁਮ ਧਨ੍ਯ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪਾ। ਨਾਮ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਾਰ ਹਰਤ ਸਂਤਾਪਾ॥
Dhanya dhanya tuma dhanya pratapa Nama tumhara harata samtapa
ਅਰਥ:Blessed, blessed, blessed is your majesty; your name removes all affliction.
ਸਤ੍ਯ ਸ਼ੁਦ੍ਧ ਦੇਵਨ ਮੁਖ ਗਾਯਾ। ਬਜੀ ਦੁਨ੍ਦੁਭੀ ਸ਼ਂਖ ਬਜਾਯਾ॥
Satya shuddha devana mukha gaya Baji dundubhi shamkha bajaya
ਅਰਥ:The true, pure praise was sung from the mouths of the gods; kettledrums sounded and conches were blown.
ਸਤ੍ਯ ਸਤ੍ਯ ਤੁਮ ਸਤ੍ਯ ਸਨਾਤਨ। ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਹੋ ਹਮਰੇ ਤਨ-ਮਨ ਧਨ॥
Satya satya tuma satya sanatana Tuma hi ho hamare tana-mana dhana
ਅਰਥ:Truly, truly you are the eternal Truth; you alone are our body, mind and wealth.
ਯਾਕੋ ਪਾਠ ਕਰੇ ਜੋ ਕੋਈ। ਜ੍ਞਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਕਟ ਤਾਕੇ ਉਰ ਹੋਈ॥
Yako patha kare jo koi Jnana prakata take ura hoi
ਅਰਥ:Whoever recites this — knowledge arises clearly in their heart.
ਆਵਾਗਮਨ ਮਿਟੈ ਤਿਹਿ ਕੇਰਾ। ਸਤ੍ਯ ਵਚਨ ਮਾਨੇ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਮੇਰਾ॥
Avagamana mitai tihi kera Satya vachana mane shiva mera
ਅਰਥ:Their cycle of birth and death is ended — Shiva himself accepts this as true.
ਔਰ ਆਸ ਮਨ ਮੇਂ ਜੋ ਹੋਈ। ਮਨਵਾਂਛਿਤ ਫਲ ਪਾਵੇ ਸੋਈ॥
Aura asa mana mem jo hoi Manavamchhita phala pave soi
ਅਰਥ:And whatever other hope is in the mind, that very wish is fulfilled.
ਤੀਨਹੁਂ ਕਾਲ ਧ੍ਯਾਨ ਜੋ ਲ੍ਯਾਵੈ। ਤੁਲਸੀ ਦਲ ਅਰੁ ਫੂਲ ਚਢ़ਾਵੈ॥
Tinahum kala dhyana jo lyavai Tulasi dala aru phula chadha़avai
ਅਰਥ:Whoever brings your meditation at all three times of day, and offers tulsi leaves and flowers —
ਸਾਗ ਪਤ੍ਰ ਸੋ ਭੋਗ ਲਗਾਵੈ। ਸੋ ਨਰ ਸਕਲ ਸਿਦ੍ਧਤਾ ਪਾਵੈ॥
Saga patra so bhoga lagavai So nara sakala siddhata pavai
ਅਰਥ:— and offers a simple food of greens — that person attains complete perfection.
ਅਨ੍ਤ ਸਮਯ ਰਘੁਬਰ ਪੁਰ ਜਾਈ। ਜਹਾਂ ਜਨ੍ਮ ਹਰਿ ਭਕ੍ਤ ਕਹਾਈ॥
Anta samaya raghubara pura jai Jaham janma hari bhakta kahai
ਅਰਥ:At the final hour they go to Rama's abode, where they are born as a devotee of Hari.
ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਦਾਸ ਕਹੈ ਅਰੁ ਗਾਵੈ। ਸੋ ਬੈਕੁਣ੍ਠ ਧਾਮ ਕੋ ਪਾਵੈ॥
Shri haridasa kahai aru gavai So baikuntha dhama ko pavai
ਅਰਥ:So says and sings Sri Haridas; that one attains the abode of Vaikuntha.
ਸਾਤ ਦਿਵਸ ਜੋ ਨੇਮ ਕਰ,ਪਾਠ ਕਰੇ ਚਿਤ ਲਾਯ। ਹਰਿਦਾਸ ਹਰਿ ਕृਪਾ ਸੇ,ਅਵਸਿ ਭਕ੍ਤਿ ਕੋ ਪਾਯ॥
Sata divasa jo nema kara,patha kare chita laya Haridasa hari kripa se,avasi bhakti ko paya
ਅਰਥ:Whoever, with a focused mind, keeps the discipline for seven days and recites it — by Hari's grace Haridas (the devotee) surely attains devotion.
ਰਾਮ ਚਾਲੀਸਾ ਜੋ ਪਢ़ੇ,ਰਾਮ ਚਰਣ ਚਿਤ ਲਾਯ। ਜੋ ਇਚ੍ਛਾ ਮਨ ਮੇਂ ਕਰੈ,ਸਕਲ ਸਿਦ੍ਧ ਹੋ ਜਾਯ॥
Rama chalisa jo padha़e,rama charana chita laya Jo ichchha mana mem karai,sakala siddha ho jaya
ਅਰਥ:Whoever reads the Ram Chalisa, fixing the mind on Rama's feet — whatever wish is in the mind, all is fulfilled.

Daily recitation of the Ram Chalisa invokes the grace of Lord Rama (Maryada Purushottam) for protection, victory and righteousness.
Said to remove fear, enemies and obstacles, and to grant peace, prosperity and devotion.
The Chalisa promises that whoever recites it with the mind fixed on Rama's feet has every sincere wish fulfilled.
Recalls the glory of Rama's name — which even the Vedas proclaim and Shiva eternally repeats.
Especially powerful on Ram Navami, Tuesdays, and during Ramayana / Sundarkand recitation.
Keeping the seven-day discipline of recitation is said to surely bestow devotion by Hari's grace.
राम चालीसा ਪਾਠ ਵਿਧੀ
After bathing, sit before an image of Sri Rama (with Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman). Light a lamp, offer tulsi leaves and flowers, and recite the Chalisa with the mind fixed on Rama's lotus feet. The text recommends a focused seven-day observance for devotion. Conclude with 'Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram' and aarti.
