The Surya Chalisa, also called the Bhanu Chalisa, is a forty-verse Hindi hymn to the Sun God — the visible deity (pratyaksha devata) worshipped since Vedic times as the source of life, light and health. It garlands Surya's twelve names and forms, sets a protective shield of his rays over every limb, and promises vitality and the washing-away of sin to all who greet the rising sun with its verses.

The Chalisa promises that singing the Sun's twelve names destroys the sins of a thousand births, that his ray-armour shields every limb so 'no fear remains anywhere in the world', and that even ringworm and leprosy never touch the devoted reciter — echoing the Aditya Hridaya, by which Sage Agastya armed Rama to vanquish Ravana.

ಅರ್ಥ:Of golden body, with makara-shaped earrings and a pearl garland upon his limbs — meditate upon him seated in the lotus posture, with conch and discus.
ಜಯ ಸವಿತಾ ಜಯ ಜಯತಿ ದಿವಾಕರ!।ಸಹಸ್ರಾಂಶು! ಸಪ್ತಾಶ್ವ ತಿಮಿರಹರ॥
Jaya savita jaya jayati divakara!sahasramshu! saptashva timirahara
ಅರ್ಥ:Victory, O Savita; victory, victory, O Diwakar (day-maker)! O thousand-rayed, seven-horsed remover of darkness!
ಭಾನು! ಪತಂಗ! ಮರೀಚೀ! ಭಾಸ್ಕರ!।ಸವಿತಾ ಹಂಸ! ಸುನೂರ ವಿಭಾಕರ॥
Bhanu! patamga! marichi! bhaskara!savita hamsa! sunura vibhakara
ಅರ್ಥ:O Bhanu! Patanga! Marichi! Bhaskara! Savita! Hamsa! O radiant maker of light!
ವಿವಸ್ವಾನ! ಆದಿತ್ಯ! ವಿಕರ್ತನ।ಮಾರ್ತಣ್ಡ ಹರಿರೂಪ ವಿರೋಚನ॥
Vivasvana! aditya! vikartanamartanda harirupa virochana
ಅರ್ಥ:O Vivasvan! Aditya! Vikartana! Martanda, of Hari's form, Virochana!
ಅಮ್ಬರಮಣಿ! ಖಗ! ರವಿ ಕಹಲಾತೇ।ವೇದ ಹಿರಣ್ಯಗರ್ಭ ಕಹ ಗಾತೇ॥
Ambaramani! khaga! ravi kahalateveda hiranyagarbha kaha gate
ಅರ್ಥ:Jewel of the sky (Ambaramani), bird of the heavens (Khaga), you are called Ravi; the Vedas sing you as Hiranyagarbha.
ಸಹಸ್ರಾಂಶು ಪ್ರದ್ಯೋತನ, ಕಹಿಕಹಿ।ಮುನಿಗನ ಹೋತ ಪ್ರಸನ್ನ ಮೋದಲಹಿ॥
Sahasramshu pradyotana, kahikahimunigana hota prasanna modalahi
ಅರ್ಥ:Calling 'thousand-rayed, all-illuminating', the sages grow joyful and attain delight.
ಅರುಣ ಸದೃಶ ಸಾರಥೀ ಮನೋಹರ।ಹಾಂಕತ ಹಯ ಸಾತಾ ಚढ़ಿ ರಥ ಪರ॥
Aruna sadrisha sarathi manoharahamkata haya sata chaढ़i ratha para
ಅರ್ಥ:Your charming charioteer, like Aruna, drives the seven horses, mounted upon the chariot.
ಮಂಡಲ ಕೀ ಮಹಿಮಾ ಅತಿ ನ್ಯಾರೀ।ತೇಜ ರೂಪ ಕೇರೀ ಬಲಿಹಾರೀ॥
Mamdala ki mahima ati nyariteja rupa keri balihari
ಅರ್ಥ:The glory of your orb is most wondrous; I am a sacrifice to your form of splendour.
ಉಚ್ಚೈಃಶ್ರವಾ ಸದೃಶ ಹಯ ಜೋತೇ।ದೇಖಿ ಪುರನ್ದರ ಲಜ್ಜಿತ ಹೋತೇ॥
Uchchaihshrava sadrisha haya jotedekhi purandara lajjita hote
ಅರ್ಥ:Yoking horses like Uchchaihshravas, even Indra (Purandara) is put to shame at the sight.
ಮಿತ್ರ ಮರೀಚಿ ಭಾನು ಅರುಣ ಭಾಸ್ಕರ।ಸವಿತಾ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಅರ್ಕ ಖಗ ಕಲಿಕರ॥
Mitra marichi bhanu aruna bhaskarasavita surya arka khaga kalikara
ಅರ್ಥ:Mitra, Marichi, Bhanu, Aruna, Bhaskara; Savita, Surya, Arka, Khaga, the maker of the ages —
ಪೂಷಾ ರವಿ ಆದಿತ್ಯ ನಾಮ ಲೈ।ಹಿರಣ್ಯಗರ್ಭಾಯ ನಮಃ ಕಹಿಕೈ॥
Pusha ravi aditya nama laihiranyagarbhaya namah kahikai
ಅರ್ಥ:— taking the names Pusha, Ravi, Aditya, and saying 'Hiranyagarbhaya Namah',
ದ್ವಾದಸ ನಾಮ ಪ್ರೇಮ ಸೋಂ ಗಾವೈಂ।ಮಸ್ತಕ ಬಾರಹ ಬಾರ ನವಾವೈಂ॥
Dvadasa nama prema som gavaimmastaka baraha bara navavaim
ಅರ್ಥ:— singing these twelve names with love, and bowing the head twelve times,
ಚಾರ ಪದಾರಥ ಜನ ಸೋ ಪಾವೈ।ದುಃಖ ದಾರಿದ್ರ ಅಘ ಪುಂಜ ನಸಾವೈ॥
Chara padaratha jana so pavaiduhkha daridra agha pumja nasavai
ಅರ್ಥ:— that devotee attains the four aims of life; sorrow, poverty and heaps of sin are destroyed.
ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ ಕೋ ಚಮತ್ಕಾರ ಯಹ।ವಿಧಿ ಹರಿಹರ ಕೋ ಕೃಪಾಸಾರ ಯಹ॥
Namaskara ko chamatkara yahavidhi harihara ko kripasara yaha
ಅರ್ಥ:This is the miracle of the salutation — it is the very essence of the grace of Brahma, Hari and Hara.
ಸೇವೈ ಭಾನು ತುಮಹಿಂ ಮನ ಲಾಈ।ಅಷ್ಟಸಿದ್ಧಿ ನವನಿಧಿ ತೇಹಿಂ ಪಾಈ॥
Sevai bhanu tumahim mana laiashtasiddhi navanidhi tehim pai
ಅರ್ಥ:Whoever serves you, Bhanu, with a devoted mind, attains the eight siddhis and the nine treasures.
ಬಾರಹ ನಾಮ ಉಚ್ಚಾರನ ಕರತೇ।ಸಹಸ ಜನಮ ಕೇ ಪಾತಕ ಟರತೇ॥
Baraha nama uchcharana karatesahasa janama ke pataka tarate
ಅರ್ಥ:Reciting the twelve names, the sins of a thousand births are wiped away.
ಉಪಾಖ್ಯಾನ ಜೋ ಕರತೇ ತವಜನ।ರಿಪು ಸೋಂ ಜಮಲಹತೇ ಸೋತೇಹಿ ಛನ॥
Upakhyana jo karate tavajanaripu som jamalahate sotehi chhana
ಅರ್ಥ:The devotee who recounts your glory overcomes the enemy in that very moment, as if by Yama.
ಧನ ಸುತ ಜುತ ಪರಿವಾರ ಬಢ़ತು ಹೈ।ಪ್ರಬಲ ಮೋಹ ಕೋ ಫಂದ ಕಟತು ಹೈ॥
Dhana suta juta parivara badha़tu haiprabala moha ko phamda katatu hai
ಅರ್ಥ:His wealth, sons and family increase; the strong noose of delusion is cut away.
ಅರ್ಕ ಶೀಶ ಕೋ ರಕ್ಷಾ ಕರತೇ।ರವಿ ಲಲಾಟ ಪರ ನಿತ್ಯ ಬಿಹರತೇ॥
Arka shisha ko raksha karateravi lalata para nitya biharate
ಅರ್ಥ:May Arka protect my head; may Ravi ever abide upon my forehead.
ಸೂರ್ಯ ನೇತ್ರ ಪರ ನಿತ್ಯ ವಿರಾಜತ।ಕರ್ಣ ದೇಸ ಪರ ದಿನಕರ ಛಾಜತ॥
Surya netra para nitya virajatakarna desa para dinakara chhajata
ಅರ್ಥ:May Surya ever rest upon my eyes; may Dinakar shade the region of my ears.
ಭಾನು ನಾಸಿಕಾ ವಾಸಕರಹುನಿತ।ಭಾಸ್ಕರ ಕರತ ಸದಾ ಮುಖಕೋ ಹಿತ॥
Bhanu nasika vasakarahunitabhaskara karata sada mukhako hita
ಅರ್ಥ:May Bhanu ever dwell upon my nose; may Bhaskara ever do good to my mouth.
ಓಂಠ ರಹೈಂ ಪರ್ಜನ್ಯ ಹಮಾರೇ।ರಸನಾ ಬೀಚ ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣ ಬಸ ಪ್ಯಾರೇ॥
Omtha rahaim parjanya hamarerasana bicha tikshna basa pyare
ಅರ್ಥ:May Parjanya abide upon my lips; may the sharp-rayed one dwell upon my tongue, dear one.
ಕಂಠ ಸುವರ್ಣ ರೇತ ಕೀ ಶೋಭಾ।ತಿಗ್ಮ ತೇಜಸಃ ಕಾಂಧೇ ಲೋಭಾ॥
Kamtha suvarna reta ki shobhatigma tejasah kamdhe lobha
ಅರ್ಥ:The beauty of gold-sand upon my throat; may the fiercely radiant one delight upon my shoulders.
ಪೂಷಾಂ ಬಾಹೂ ಮಿತ್ರ ಪೀಠಹಿಂ ಪರ।ತ್ವಷ್ಟಾ ವರುಣ ರಹತ ಸುಉಷ್ಣಕರ॥
Pusham bahu mitra pithahim paratvashta varuna rahata suushnakara
ಅರ್ಥ:Pusha upon my arms, Mitra upon my back; Tvashta and Varuna remain, giving gentle warmth.
ಯುಗಲ ಹಾಥ ಪರ ರಕ್ಷಾ ಕಾರನ।ಭಾನುಮಾನ ಉರಸರ್ಮ ಸುಉದರಚನ॥
Yugala hatha para raksha karanabhanumana urasarma suudarachana
ಅರ್ಥ:Protection upon both my hands; Bhanuman warm upon my chest and belly.
ಬಸತ ನಾಭಿ ಆದಿತ್ಯ ಮನೋಹರ।ಕಟಿಮಂಹ, ರಹತ ಮನ ಮುದಭರ॥
Basata nabhi aditya manoharakatimamha, rahata mana mudabhara
ಅರ್ಥ:The charming Aditya dwells at my navel; at my waist he remains, filling the mind with joy.
ಜಂಘಾ ಗೋಪತಿ ಸವಿತಾ ಬಾಸಾ।ಗುಪ್ತ ದಿವಾಕರ ಕರತ ಹುಲಾಸಾ॥
Jamgha gopati savita basagupta divakara karata hulasa
ಅರ್ಥ:Gopati Savita dwells upon my thighs; the hidden Diwakar brings gladness.
ವಿವಸ್ವಾನ ಪದ ಕೀ ರಖವಾರೀ।ಬಾಹರ ಬಸತೇ ನಿತ ತಮ ಹಾರೀ॥
Vivasvana pada ki rakhavaribahara basate nita tama hari
ಅರ್ಥ:Vivasvan guards my feet; ever dwelling without, the remover of darkness.
ಸಹಸ್ರಾಂಶು ಸರ್ವಾಂಗ ಸಮ್ಹಾರೈ।ರಕ್ಷಾ ಕವಚ ವಿಚಿತ್ರ ವಿಚಾರೇ॥
Sahasramshu sarvamga samharairaksha kavacha vichitra vichare
ಅರ್ಥ:The thousand-rayed one guards all my limbs — a wondrous, well-conceived armour of protection.
ಅಸ ಜೋಜನ ಅಪನೇ ಮನ ಮಾಹೀಂ।ಭಯ ಜಗಬೀಚ ಕರಹುಂ ತೇಹಿ ನಾಹೀಂ॥
Asa jojana apane mana mahimbhaya jagabicha karahum tehi nahim
ಅರ್ಥ:Whoever contemplates this in the mind has no fear anywhere in the world.
ದದ್ರು ಕುಷ್ಠ ತೇಹಿಂ ಕಬಹು ನ ವ್ಯಾಪೈ।ಜೋಜನ ಯಾಕೋ ಮನ ಮಂಹ ಜಾಪೈ॥
Dadru kushtha tehim kabahu na vyapaijojana yako mana mamha japai
ಅರ್ಥ:Ringworm and leprosy never afflict the one who recites this within the mind.
ಅಂಧಕಾರ ಜಗ ಕಾ ಜೋ ಹರತಾ।ನವ ಪ್ರಕಾಶ ಸೇ ಆನನ್ದ ಭರತಾ॥
Amdhakara jaga ka jo haratanava prakasha se ananda bharata
ಅರ್ಥ:He who removes the darkness of the world and fills it with new light and bliss,
ಗ್ರಹ ಗನ ಗ್ರಸಿ ನ ಮಿಟಾವತ ಜಾಹೀ।ಕೋಟಿ ಬಾರ ಮೈಂ ಪ್ರನವೌಂ ತಾಹೀ॥
Graha gana grasi na mitavata jahikoti bara maim pranavaum tahi
ಅರ್ಥ:— whom the planets can neither grasp nor extinguish — to him I bow a crore of times.
ಮಂದ ಸದೃಶ ಸುತ ಜಗ ಮೇಂ ಜಾಕೇ।ಧರ್ಮರಾಜ ಸಮ ಅದ್ಭುತ ಬಾಂಕೇ॥
Mamda sadrisha suta jaga mem jakedharmaraja sama adbhuta bamke
ಅರ್ಥ:Whose son, like Manda (Shani), is in the world; wondrous and noble, like Dharmaraja (Yama) —
ಧನ್ಯ-ಧನ್ಯ ತುಮ ದಿನಮನಿ ದೇವಾ।ಕಿಯಾ ಕರತ ಸುರಮುನಿ ನರ ಸೇವಾ॥
Dhanya-dhanya tuma dinamani devakiya karata suramuni nara seva
ಅರ್ಥ:— blessed, blessed are you, O jewel of the day, O Deva; gods, sages and men ever serve you.
ಭಕ್ತಿ ಭಾವಯುತ ಪೂರ್ಣ ನಿಯಮ ಸೋಂ।ದೂರ ಹಟತಸೋ ಭವಕೇ ಭ್ರಮ ಸೋಂ॥
Bhakti bhavayuta purna niyama somdura hatataso bhavake bhrama som
ಅರ್ಥ:With devotion and full observance of the rules, one moves far from the delusions of worldly existence.
ಪರಮ ಧನ್ಯ ಸೋಂ ನರ ತನಧಾರೀ।ಹೈಂ ಪ್ರಸನ್ನ ಜೇಹಿ ಪರ ತಮ ಹಾರೀ॥
Parama dhanya som nara tanadharihaim prasanna jehi para tama hari
ಅರ್ಥ:Most blessed is the embodied soul upon whom the remover of darkness is pleased.
ಅರುಣ ಮಾಘ ಮಹಂ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಫಾಲ್ಗುನ।ಮಧು ವೇದಾಂಗ ನಾಮ ರವಿ ಉದಯನ॥
Aruna magha maham surya phalgunamadhu vedamga nama ravi udayana
ಅರ್ಥ:Aruna in Magha, Surya in Phalguna; Madhu (in Chaitra), Vedanga is the name of the rising Ravi;
ಭಾನು ಉದಯ ಬೈಸಾಖ ಗಿನಾವೈ।ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠ ಇನ್ದ್ರ ಆಷಾಢ़ ರವಿ ಗಾವೈ॥
Bhanu udaya baisakha ginavaijyeshtha indra ashadha़ ravi gavai
ಅರ್ಥ:— counted as Bhanu rising in Vaisakha; in Jyeshtha Indra, in Ashadha he is sung as Ravi;
ಯಮ ಭಾದೋಂ ಆಶ್ವಿನ ಹಿಮರೇತಾ।ಕಾತಿಕ ಹೋತ ದಿವಾಕರ ನೇತಾ॥
Yama bhadom ashvina himaretakatika hota divakara neta
ಅರ್ಥ:— Yama in Bhadrapada, in Ashwin 'Himreta'; in Kartik, Diwakar is the leader;
ಅಗಹನ ಭಿನ್ನ ವಿಷ್ಣು ಹೈಂ ಪೂಸಹಿಂ।ಪುರುಷ ನಾಮ ರವಿ ಹೈಂ ಮಲಮಾಸಹಿಂ॥
Agahana bhinna vishnu haim pusahimpurusha nama ravi haim malamasahim
ಅರ್ಥ:— in Agahan 'Bhinna', Vishnu in Pausha; in the intercalary month his name is 'Purusha'.
ಭಾನು ಚಾಲೀಸಾ ಪ್ರೇಮ ಯುತ,ಗಾವಹಿಂ ಜೇ ನರ ನಿತ್ಯ। ಸುಖ ಸಮ್ಪತ್ತಿ ಲಹಿ ಬಿಬಿಧ,ಹೋಂಹಿಂ ಸದಾ ಕೃತಕೃತ್ಯ॥
Bhanu chalisa prema yuta,gavahim je nara nitya Sukha sampatti lahi bibidha,homhim sada kritakritya
ಅರ್ಥ:Whoever sings the Bhanu (Surya) Chalisa daily with love attains varied happiness and prosperity, and is ever fulfilled.

Recites the twelve sacred names (Dvadasa Aditya) of the Sun, whose chanting is said to wipe away the sins of a thousand births.
Includes a body-part 'kavach' invoking the Sun's protection over head, eyes, ears, limbs and the whole body.
Traditionally chanted to strengthen a weak Sun in the horoscope and to relieve skin ailments and eye troubles.
Most powerful at sunrise on Sunday (Ravivar), while offering water (Arghya) to the rising sun.
Bestows the eight siddhis, nine treasures, and the four aims of life upon the devoted.
सूर्य चालीसा ಪಾರಾಯಣ ವಿಧಿ
At sunrise after bathing, face east and offer water (Arghya) to the sun from a copper vessel while reciting. Then recite the Surya Chalisa with devotion, ideally chanting the twelve names and bowing twelve times. Sunday is most auspicious; observing it with a single meal (and avoiding salt) deepens the practice.
