The Surya Chalisa, also called the Bhanu Chalisa, is a forty-verse Hindi hymn to the Sun God — the visible deity (pratyaksha devata) worshipped since Vedic times as the source of life, light and health. It garlands Surya's twelve names and forms, sets a protective shield of his rays over every limb, and promises vitality and the washing-away of sin to all who greet the rising sun with its verses.

The Chalisa promises that singing the Sun's twelve names destroys the sins of a thousand births, that his ray-armour shields every limb so 'no fear remains anywhere in the world', and that even ringworm and leprosy never touch the devoted reciter — echoing the Aditya Hridaya, by which Sage Agastya armed Rama to vanquish Ravana.

અર્થ:Of golden body, with makara-shaped earrings and a pearl garland upon his limbs — meditate upon him seated in the lotus posture, with conch and discus.
જય સવિતા જય જયતિ દિવાકર!।સહસ્રાંશુ! સપ્તાશ્વ તિમિરહર॥
Jaya savita jaya jayati divakara!sahasramshu! saptashva timirahara
અર્થ:Victory, O Savita; victory, victory, O Diwakar (day-maker)! O thousand-rayed, seven-horsed remover of darkness!
ભાનુ! પતંગ! મરીચી! ભાસ્કર!।સવિતા હંસ! સુનૂર વિભાકર॥
Bhanu! patamga! marichi! bhaskara!savita hamsa! sunura vibhakara
અર્થ:O Bhanu! Patanga! Marichi! Bhaskara! Savita! Hamsa! O radiant maker of light!
વિવસ્વાન! આદિત્ય! વિકર્તન।માર્તણ્ડ હરિરૂપ વિરોચન॥
Vivasvana! aditya! vikartanamartanda harirupa virochana
અર્થ:O Vivasvan! Aditya! Vikartana! Martanda, of Hari's form, Virochana!
અમ્બરમણિ! ખગ! રવિ કહલાતે।વેદ હિરણ્યગર્ભ કહ ગાતે॥
Ambaramani! khaga! ravi kahalateveda hiranyagarbha kaha gate
અર્થ:Jewel of the sky (Ambaramani), bird of the heavens (Khaga), you are called Ravi; the Vedas sing you as Hiranyagarbha.
સહસ્રાંશુ પ્રદ્યોતન, કહિકહિ।મુનિગન હોત પ્રસન્ન મોદલહિ॥
Sahasramshu pradyotana, kahikahimunigana hota prasanna modalahi
અર્થ:Calling 'thousand-rayed, all-illuminating', the sages grow joyful and attain delight.
અરુણ સદૃશ સારથી મનોહર।હાંકત હય સાતા ચढ़િ રથ પર॥
Aruna sadrisha sarathi manoharahamkata haya sata chaढ़i ratha para
અર્થ:Your charming charioteer, like Aruna, drives the seven horses, mounted upon the chariot.
મંડલ કી મહિમા અતિ ન્યારી।તેજ રૂપ કેરી બલિહારી॥
Mamdala ki mahima ati nyariteja rupa keri balihari
અર્થ:The glory of your orb is most wondrous; I am a sacrifice to your form of splendour.
ઉચ્ચૈઃશ્રવા સદૃશ હય જોતે।દેખિ પુરન્દર લજ્જિત હોતે॥
Uchchaihshrava sadrisha haya jotedekhi purandara lajjita hote
અર્થ:Yoking horses like Uchchaihshravas, even Indra (Purandara) is put to shame at the sight.
મિત્ર મરીચિ ભાનુ અરુણ ભાસ્કર।સવિતા સૂર્ય અર્ક ખગ કલિકર॥
Mitra marichi bhanu aruna bhaskarasavita surya arka khaga kalikara
અર્થ:Mitra, Marichi, Bhanu, Aruna, Bhaskara; Savita, Surya, Arka, Khaga, the maker of the ages —
પૂષા રવિ આદિત્ય નામ લૈ।હિરણ્યગર્ભાય નમઃ કહિકૈ॥
Pusha ravi aditya nama laihiranyagarbhaya namah kahikai
અર્થ:— taking the names Pusha, Ravi, Aditya, and saying 'Hiranyagarbhaya Namah',
દ્વાદસ નામ પ્રેમ સોં ગાવૈં।મસ્તક બારહ બાર નવાવૈં॥
Dvadasa nama prema som gavaimmastaka baraha bara navavaim
અર્થ:— singing these twelve names with love, and bowing the head twelve times,
ચાર પદારથ જન સો પાવૈ।દુઃખ દારિદ્ર અઘ પુંજ નસાવૈ॥
Chara padaratha jana so pavaiduhkha daridra agha pumja nasavai
અર્થ:— that devotee attains the four aims of life; sorrow, poverty and heaps of sin are destroyed.
નમસ્કાર કો ચમત્કાર યહ।વિધિ હરિહર કો કૃપાસાર યહ॥
Namaskara ko chamatkara yahavidhi harihara ko kripasara yaha
અર્થ:This is the miracle of the salutation — it is the very essence of the grace of Brahma, Hari and Hara.
સેવૈ ભાનુ તુમહિં મન લાઈ।અષ્ટસિદ્ધિ નવનિધિ તેહિં પાઈ॥
Sevai bhanu tumahim mana laiashtasiddhi navanidhi tehim pai
અર્થ:Whoever serves you, Bhanu, with a devoted mind, attains the eight siddhis and the nine treasures.
બારહ નામ ઉચ્ચારન કરતે।સહસ જનમ કે પાતક ટરતે॥
Baraha nama uchcharana karatesahasa janama ke pataka tarate
અર્થ:Reciting the twelve names, the sins of a thousand births are wiped away.
ઉપાખ્યાન જો કરતે તવજન।રિપુ સોં જમલહતે સોતેહિ છન॥
Upakhyana jo karate tavajanaripu som jamalahate sotehi chhana
અર્થ:The devotee who recounts your glory overcomes the enemy in that very moment, as if by Yama.
ધન સુત જુત પરિવાર બઢ़તુ હૈ।પ્રબલ મોહ કો ફંદ કટતુ હૈ॥
Dhana suta juta parivara badha़tu haiprabala moha ko phamda katatu hai
અર્થ:His wealth, sons and family increase; the strong noose of delusion is cut away.
અર્ક શીશ કો રક્ષા કરતે।રવિ લલાટ પર નિત્ય બિહરતે॥
Arka shisha ko raksha karateravi lalata para nitya biharate
અર્થ:May Arka protect my head; may Ravi ever abide upon my forehead.
સૂર્ય નેત્ર પર નિત્ય વિરાજત।કર્ણ દેસ પર દિનકર છાજત॥
Surya netra para nitya virajatakarna desa para dinakara chhajata
અર્થ:May Surya ever rest upon my eyes; may Dinakar shade the region of my ears.
ભાનુ નાસિકા વાસકરહુનિત।ભાસ્કર કરત સદા મુખકો હિત॥
Bhanu nasika vasakarahunitabhaskara karata sada mukhako hita
અર્થ:May Bhanu ever dwell upon my nose; may Bhaskara ever do good to my mouth.
ઓંઠ રહૈં પર્જન્ય હમારે।રસના બીચ તીક્ષ્ણ બસ પ્યારે॥
Omtha rahaim parjanya hamarerasana bicha tikshna basa pyare
અર્થ:May Parjanya abide upon my lips; may the sharp-rayed one dwell upon my tongue, dear one.
કંઠ સુવર્ણ રેત કી શોભા।તિગ્મ તેજસઃ કાંધે લોભા॥
Kamtha suvarna reta ki shobhatigma tejasah kamdhe lobha
અર્થ:The beauty of gold-sand upon my throat; may the fiercely radiant one delight upon my shoulders.
પૂષાં બાહૂ મિત્ર પીઠહિં પર।ત્વષ્ટા વરુણ રહત સુઉષ્ણકર॥
Pusham bahu mitra pithahim paratvashta varuna rahata suushnakara
અર્થ:Pusha upon my arms, Mitra upon my back; Tvashta and Varuna remain, giving gentle warmth.
યુગલ હાથ પર રક્ષા કારન।ભાનુમાન ઉરસર્મ સુઉદરચન॥
Yugala hatha para raksha karanabhanumana urasarma suudarachana
અર્થ:Protection upon both my hands; Bhanuman warm upon my chest and belly.
બસત નાભિ આદિત્ય મનોહર।કટિમંહ, રહત મન મુદભર॥
Basata nabhi aditya manoharakatimamha, rahata mana mudabhara
અર્થ:The charming Aditya dwells at my navel; at my waist he remains, filling the mind with joy.
જંઘા ગોપતિ સવિતા બાસા।ગુપ્ત દિવાકર કરત હુલાસા॥
Jamgha gopati savita basagupta divakara karata hulasa
અર્થ:Gopati Savita dwells upon my thighs; the hidden Diwakar brings gladness.
વિવસ્વાન પદ કી રખવારી।બાહર બસતે નિત તમ હારી॥
Vivasvana pada ki rakhavaribahara basate nita tama hari
અર્થ:Vivasvan guards my feet; ever dwelling without, the remover of darkness.
સહસ્રાંશુ સર્વાંગ સમ્હારૈ।રક્ષા કવચ વિચિત્ર વિચારે॥
Sahasramshu sarvamga samharairaksha kavacha vichitra vichare
અર્થ:The thousand-rayed one guards all my limbs — a wondrous, well-conceived armour of protection.
અસ જોજન અપને મન માહીં।ભય જગબીચ કરહું તેહિ નાહીં॥
Asa jojana apane mana mahimbhaya jagabicha karahum tehi nahim
અર્થ:Whoever contemplates this in the mind has no fear anywhere in the world.
દદ્રુ કુષ્ઠ તેહિં કબહુ ન વ્યાપૈ।જોજન યાકો મન મંહ જાપૈ॥
Dadru kushtha tehim kabahu na vyapaijojana yako mana mamha japai
અર્થ:Ringworm and leprosy never afflict the one who recites this within the mind.
અંધકાર જગ કા જો હરતા।નવ પ્રકાશ સે આનન્દ ભરતા॥
Amdhakara jaga ka jo haratanava prakasha se ananda bharata
અર્થ:He who removes the darkness of the world and fills it with new light and bliss,
ગ્રહ ગન ગ્રસિ ન મિટાવત જાહી।કોટિ બાર મૈં પ્રનવૌં તાહી॥
Graha gana grasi na mitavata jahikoti bara maim pranavaum tahi
અર્થ:— whom the planets can neither grasp nor extinguish — to him I bow a crore of times.
મંદ સદૃશ સુત જગ મેં જાકે।ધર્મરાજ સમ અદ્ભુત બાંકે॥
Mamda sadrisha suta jaga mem jakedharmaraja sama adbhuta bamke
અર્થ:Whose son, like Manda (Shani), is in the world; wondrous and noble, like Dharmaraja (Yama) —
ધન્ય-ધન્ય તુમ દિનમનિ દેવા।કિયા કરત સુરમુનિ નર સેવા॥
Dhanya-dhanya tuma dinamani devakiya karata suramuni nara seva
અર્થ:— blessed, blessed are you, O jewel of the day, O Deva; gods, sages and men ever serve you.
ભક્તિ ભાવયુત પૂર્ણ નિયમ સોં।દૂર હટતસો ભવકે ભ્રમ સોં॥
Bhakti bhavayuta purna niyama somdura hatataso bhavake bhrama som
અર્થ:With devotion and full observance of the rules, one moves far from the delusions of worldly existence.
પરમ ધન્ય સોં નર તનધારી।હૈં પ્રસન્ન જેહિ પર તમ હારી॥
Parama dhanya som nara tanadharihaim prasanna jehi para tama hari
અર્થ:Most blessed is the embodied soul upon whom the remover of darkness is pleased.
અરુણ માઘ મહં સૂર્ય ફાલ્ગુન।મધુ વેદાંગ નામ રવિ ઉદયન॥
Aruna magha maham surya phalgunamadhu vedamga nama ravi udayana
અર્થ:Aruna in Magha, Surya in Phalguna; Madhu (in Chaitra), Vedanga is the name of the rising Ravi;
ભાનુ ઉદય બૈસાખ ગિનાવૈ।જ્યેષ્ઠ ઇન્દ્ર આષાઢ़ રવિ ગાવૈ॥
Bhanu udaya baisakha ginavaijyeshtha indra ashadha़ ravi gavai
અર્થ:— counted as Bhanu rising in Vaisakha; in Jyeshtha Indra, in Ashadha he is sung as Ravi;
યમ ભાદોં આશ્વિન હિમરેતા।કાતિક હોત દિવાકર નેતા॥
Yama bhadom ashvina himaretakatika hota divakara neta
અર્થ:— Yama in Bhadrapada, in Ashwin 'Himreta'; in Kartik, Diwakar is the leader;
અગહન ભિન્ન વિષ્ણુ હૈં પૂસહિં।પુરુષ નામ રવિ હૈં મલમાસહિં॥
Agahana bhinna vishnu haim pusahimpurusha nama ravi haim malamasahim
અર્થ:— in Agahan 'Bhinna', Vishnu in Pausha; in the intercalary month his name is 'Purusha'.
ભાનુ ચાલીસા પ્રેમ યુત,ગાવહિં જે નર નિત્ય। સુખ સમ્પત્તિ લહિ બિબિધ,હોંહિં સદા કૃતકૃત્ય॥
Bhanu chalisa prema yuta,gavahim je nara nitya Sukha sampatti lahi bibidha,homhim sada kritakritya
અર્થ:Whoever sings the Bhanu (Surya) Chalisa daily with love attains varied happiness and prosperity, and is ever fulfilled.

सूर्य चालीसा જપ વિધિ
At sunrise after bathing, face east and offer water (Arghya) to the sun from a copper vessel while reciting. Then recite the Surya Chalisa with devotion, ideally chanting the twelve names and bowing twelve times. Sunday is most auspicious; observing it with a single meal (and avoiding salt) deepens the practice.
