Sheetla Mata, 'the cool one,' is the Goddess (a form of Durga) who both wards off and heals fevers, pox and epidemic diseases — riding a donkey and bearing a broom, winnow, pot and neem leaves. On Sheetla Ashtami (Basoda), devotees offer her cooling, day-before food and worship her for the health and protection of their children and homes.

It is said that those stricken with fever, pox or skin disease who take Sheetla Mata's refuge are healed — even the leper made pure and the blind given sight. On Basoda, no fresh fire is lit; cool food prepared the day before is offered, and this aarti is sung for the family's health.

பொருள்:Mother, victory to Sheetla Mata; primordial light, great queen, the giver of every fruit.

சுலோகம் 2

ரதந ஸிம்ஹாஸந ஶோபித ஶ்வேத சத்ர பாதா । ரு'த்தி ஸித்தி சம்வர டுலாவேம் ஜகமக சவி சாதா ॥

Ratana simhasana shobhita shveta chhatra bhata Riddhi siddhi chanvara dhulavem jagamaga chhavi chhata

பொருள்:Resplendent on a jewelled throne, the white parasol gleaming; Riddhi and Siddhi wave the fly-whisk, your radiant image shining bright.

விஷ்ணு ஸேவத டாட़ே ஸேவேம் ஶிவ தாதா । வேத புராண வரணத பார நஹீம் பாதா ॥

Vishnu sevata thadha़e sevem shiva dhata Veda purana varanata para nahim pata

பொருள்:Vishnu stands serving you, Shiva and Brahma serve you; the Vedas and Puranas describe you, yet find no end to your glory.

சுலோகம் 4

இந்த்ர ம்ரு'தம்க பஜாவத சந்த்ர வீணா ஹாதா । ஸூரஜ தால பஜாவை நாரத முநி காதா ॥

Indra mridamga bajavata chandra vina hatha Suraja tala bajavai narada muni gata

பொருள்:Indra plays the mridang, the Moon the veena in hand; the Sun keeps the rhythm and the sage Narada sings.

கண்டா ஶங்க ஶஹநாஈ பாஜை மந பாதா । கரைம் பக்தஜந ஆரதீ லகி லகி ஹர்ஷாதா ॥

Ghanta shankha shahanai bajai mana bhata Karaim bhaktajana arati lakhi lakhi harshata

பொருள்:Bell, conch and shehnai sound, delighting the heart; the devotees perform the aarti, rejoicing at the sight of you.

சுலோகம் 6

ப்ரஹ்மரூப வரதாநீ தூ ஹீ தீந கால ஜ்ஞாதா । பக்தந கோ ஸுக தேதீ மாது பிதா ப்ராதா ॥

Brahmarupa varadani tu hi tina kala jnata Bhaktana ko sukha deti matu pita bhrata

பொருள்:Of the form of Brahman, granter of boons, you are the knower of the three times; you give joy to devotees as mother, father and brother.

ஜோ ஜந த்யாந லகாவே ப்ரேம ஶக்தி பாதா । ஸகல மநோரத பாவே பவநிதி தர ஜாதா ॥

Jo jana dhyana lagave prema shakti pata Sakala manoratha pave bhavanidhi tara jata

பொருள்:Whoever fixes the mind upon you in love gains power; he obtains every wish and crosses the ocean of existence.

சுலோகம் 8

ரோகோம் ஸே ஜோ பீட़ித கோஈ ஶரண தேரீ ஆதா । கோட़ீ பாவே நிர்மல காயா அந்த நேத்ர பாதா ॥

Rogom se jo pida़ita koi sharana teri ata Kodha़i pave nirmala kaya andha netra pata

பொருள்:Whoever, tormented by disease, comes to your refuge — the leper gains a pure body and the blind regain their eyes.

சுலோகம் 9

பாம்ச புத்ர கோ பாவே தாரித்ர கட ஜாதா । தாகோ பஜை ஜோ நாஹீம் ஸிர துநி பசதாதா ॥

Banjha putra ko pave daridra kata jata Tako bhajai jo nahim sira dhuni pachhatata

பொருள்:The barren woman gains a son and poverty is cut away; whoever does not worship you beats his head in regret.

சுலோகம் 10

ஶீதல கரதீ ஜநநீ தூ ஹீ ஹை ஜக த்ராதா । உத்பத்தி வ்யாதி பிநாஶந தூ ஸப கீ காதா ॥

Shitala karati janani tu hi hai jaga trata Utpatti vyadhi binashana tu saba ki ghata

பொருள்:You cool and soothe, O Mother, you are the saviour of the world; you create, destroy disease, and are the end of all.

தாஸ விசித்ர கர ஜோட़ே ஸுந மேரீ மாதா । பக்தி ஆபநீ தீஜை ஔர ந குச பாதா ॥

Dasa vichitra kara joda़e suna meri mata Bhakti apani dijai aura na kuchha bhata

பொருள்:Your servant Vichitra folds his hands — hear me, O Mother; grant me your devotion, for nothing else delights me.

திசைFacing the deity

Light a lamp (ghee or camphor) and, holding it, perform the aarti by circling it before the deity while singing, ideally with a bell. Offer flowers and prasad, and conclude by taking the aarti blessing (passing the hands over the flame and to the eyes). Sing with devotion and a steady heart.
